A fantastic moment, and the background is mindboggling once again. Alina appears really "wildish" here, without overplaying her part in this shot. Which is an achievement in itself, as most people who are not used to be in front of a lense either look deadly embarassed or are overacting. Which spoils any artistic intention.

Alina looks so much more grown up than she did just a year ago. That's a silly remark, I know, but I mean to say that she has a stronger, more confident presence now; like a woman who knows who she is exactly, and is not easily fooled anymore. Forgive me if I seem to talk bullshit here, but I think the change is quite remarkable.

Anyway, the two of you work very well together indeed, and I hope that during your holidays there will be lots more opportunities and outings with her - just make sure your camera is always with you.

it's funny though cos this was more of a 'in between shots' kind of shot, it was more spontaneous than planned

she might not get easily fooled, she is training to become a policewoman after all

there will certainly be more of alina, after she's done with her summer exams!
and not to forget, thank you for commenting again!

A police woman? It's good of her to be willing to serve the community, and the better educated a police force is, the more sensible it will act. I hope the pay is going to justify her efforts and sacrifices.

At the same time, I fear for her, because she will see and experience things that might turn her world upside down in a rotten way. But Alina looks tough, and maybe she'll have the satisfaction of removing these folks from the public who are hindrance to Romanias development. Sounds rather futuristic, I know.

It just crossed my mind that you mentioned a while ago that you've studied Romanian literature. As I'm trying to read my way all around the world (I'm in Iran at the moment, of all places ), I would be grateful if you could recommend some Romanian authors whose works have been translated, preferably into English, of course. Lately, there have been lots of essays about written works from Romanians in my fav newspaper, but they all relied on translations into German. Unfortunately, German-speaking translators are normally not the most gifted ones. So any work you deem important/interesting that might have made it into the Anglo-Saxon world would be a good starting point for me for sure.

Gladly! I generally dislike poetry but i do like Mihai Eminescu's work. He really was a genius. Lucifer is his most known and beautiful poem, its about 100 stanzas long. Other poets you might like: George Bacovia (he's like the E.A. Poe of Romania, lots of dark stuff and symbolism), Lucian Blaga (expressionism), Ion Barbu (traditionalism), Nichita Stanescu (neomodernism). If you were to choose from all these, id definitely stick to Eminescu and Bacovia.
As for prose...let's see...Ion Creanga, he wrote short stories and a few novels, his most known work is the memoir entitled Childhood Memories, the title says it all haha!
I'd definitely recommend George Calinescu's novel called Otilia's Secret, the novel by Camil Petrescu - The Last Night of Love, First Night Of War, and absolutely anything by the drama writer Ion Luca Caragiale.

I'm sure all of these authors were translated into english. I do hope i'm right!
If there's any other genre you need any info on, please ask

Thank you heaps for taking the time to recommend all these Romanian writers and works. With this list of yours, I have been visiting amazon.com and amazon.de; but right now it doesn't look that good. It's quite frustrating, actually. Most that was once available is out of print. There is always the chance that I can get my hands on it by accepting second-hand goods. But that's something I do only when I'm really desperate. I love the feel and smell of a new book, one that hasn't spent too much time in sweaty hands and has coffee stains on every other page.

These two writers seem to be readily available: Catalin Dorian Florescu and Mircea Cartarescu. Would you know if they are any good?

I'll be checking out amazon.co.uk next, their stock is probably more EC-centred than the one found on amazon.com.

Thanks again, I appreciate your help very much.

im sorry for replying almost two months late, i hope that if you bought any of those books they were at least decent! i thought you were going to borrow the books from a local library, thats why i was sure you could find them. i dont know anything about Catalin Dorian Florescu, but Mircea Cartarescu is quite a praised romanian writer. He is a postmodernist though, and i'm really not into this type of literature. My favourite literary currents are romanticism and traditionalism, so i can't really give you much feedback on this one. But please do ask if there's anything else i might be able to help with

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

EyeDance In reply to ymefreak [2010-09-13 20:23:29 +0000 UTC]

It's just recently that I got copies from Catalin Dorian Florescu (Zaira, in German) and Mircea Cartarescu (Nostalgia, in English) through Amazon, so I haven't had the time to delve into them; especially since I couldn't resist ordering some books from Nabokov, Mark Twain and Henry Rider Haggard as well. I made sure that I'm going to be buried under an avalanche of new books. I know I will complain in the near future that I haven't managed to read them all as fast as I meant to, but in time, I'll get there.

I kept your list of Romanian writers, in the hope that I'll be able to get at least hold on some of their works in time. A library would probably be a very good idea. But I've got unfortunately an irritating habit: I need to own a book when I like a writers work. Why this should be so, I don't know. I only know that I would hate to have to give back a book to the librarian when the time is up.

I thank you again for the time you've taken to suggest a wide range of written Romanian works; made so much more valid by your specific knowledge of Romanian literature.
