Description
To most Hawthorne is the middle Child of the Great Colonies, often forgotten about in its position along the far north of Arabia Terra. That's just fine for the Hawthornians, who prefer their cold corner of Mars left to its own devices.Like New Virginia and Bradbury, Hawthorn was blessed with a large natural harbor, however it was only after a half century of dredging that it was made deep enough to support large maritime trade. It enjoys an important position as a stopover between the two hemispheres, but its rivers don't run deep enough inland, nor does it host a space elevator for it to be a top tier colonies. Hawthorne sits right on the middle, never able to rise beyond its present station, but always wealthy enough so that it doesn't have to. Many attribute this to its status as the swingiest of swing states in Martian politics, entertaining both automated governing principles and hyperdemocracy championed by its founders. At one point during the Second Martian Revolution, New Hawthorne City was seen to be positioning itself as the planetary capital of an Independent Mars. Two years later it was one of the largest sources of recruits joining the war to preserve the Union. Hence the saying: "Where Mars goes, so goes Hawthorne."
Special thanks to reddit user Rubika who adapted my Mars topographic map into the background for this map. We're gonna be doing some more collaborations so keep an eye out for this to become a bit of a series.
