It doesn't really look realistic, but it's good for a compliment to hatching and crosshatching.

It looks realistic if done right. Marvel does an amazing job of making it look realistic but those guys are gods with pencils.

Pencils and inks are two different things. I've seen both that look fantastic, but big, bulky black areas don't usually make appearances. Maybe some dark outlines, but not entire spots, usually. That kind of shading is better for comics and that kind of thing, not realistic stuff. To shade things like muscles or dark places, but it doesn't work, alone, to look realistic.

Then you haven't read Marvel. Jack Kirby, the best comic artist to ever live created the black shadow style. We could argue all day, but it's opinion vs. opinion and neither is right or wrong. It looks realistic to me and gives it actual dimension. I'm pretty much done with the cartoon style, myself and am moving more towards drawing like the Marvel and DC artists that continue to inspire me with their amazing work. I actually kind of dislike my old style, even. I'll be glad when I can draw like Jack Kirby, himself.

out of the blue question but what do you want to do in the future with your cartooning skills?

I want to go to RCAD (graduates from which work for companies like Pixar and Dreamworks and Nick and CN, and made award winning flicks like [link] and learn 2D animation and character design [since that's basically the only thing I eve do, design characters]. After that, I'll work for whoever hires me until I can set up my own studio, where my friends and I will make fabulous cartoons and have our own tv channel...
Or, you know, continue doing this. That works, too. X)
