Description
Hello, everybody! I’m back! Well, we’re looking at another sequel today, and what better place to look for them then the Disney Sequels? As we all know for over many years, Disney has been releasing Direct to VHS and DVD films based off their classics and today’s film is the one that started it all, The Return of Jafar. Now, I absolutely ADORE Aladdin, one of my all-time favorites with spectacular animation, creative writing, catchy songs and lovable characters. And I of course grew up with it’s sequels. But does this particular one still hold up? Let’s find out.
The Imagery:
Oh! Aah! Eeh! I…ooh…Yeah…honestly, what can I say about this animation that hasn’t been said? It looks like crap on a stick? Yes. Is it anything compared to grand imagery of the first? DEFINITELY not. While the sets look decent, the character animation is…so…BAD…I heard the film didn’t have the best budget and…MAN, does it show. There’s continuity errors all the time, and there’s even a few times where it looks like the Genie’s jaw is about to fall off! And why does Genie still have his cuffs on when he’s FREE? What else can I say except…it sucks. 2/5, Bad
The Writing:
In the sequel to the 1992 classic, the wicked Jafar is released from his lamp by a thief named Abis Mal (played by Jason Alexander), Jafar wants revenge on Aladdin, and seeing how Aladdin defeated Abis Mal earlier in the movie, he joins Jafar. Meanwhile, Jafar’s sidekick, Iago escapes the lamp on his own and wants to get Aladdin’s side so he can be in Agrabah again. But as time starts to grow, he actually starts appreciating Aladdin’s hospitality, but what will happen when Jafar goes back for Iago? So, if you haven’t guessed, this is a ‘reformation’ story with Iago, and there’s been quite a few bad examples of that done (I'm looking at you, Trixie), but actually this feels like one of the good reformations like Discord and Sunset Shimmer, but I’ll get to that in a second. The story isn’t the most original, but it is a good way to introduce kids to this kind of story. It has the same adventurous feeling as the first one, but not the same humor, not bad humor by any means, but not as good as the first one. And the songs are actually pretty good, too! I especially love how Jafar got his own song and not just a reprise of another one. 4/5, Good
The Cast:
Let’s start with our main character, Aladdin. He’s adjusting to his new life in the palace, but doesn’t know if he’ll be fit to be the Sultan’s new royal vizier. Even though he’s keeping Iago a secret at first, you really do feel for him as he wants to give Iago a fair trial. Jasmine isn’t as different from the first movie, but not in a bad way. She has a good heart but has her stubborn side too, which I do like. Then we have the Genie. We all know he was voiced by the late Robin Willaims (R.I.P.) in the first movie, and due to a small rivalry with Disney shortly after the release of the first movie, he didn’t reprise Genie for this film or the TV series until the third sequel, Aladdin and the King of Thieves. In this movie, he’s voiced by Dan Castellaneta, better known as many voices on The Simpsons, including Homer Simpson. Now, people have been bashing his performance left and right saying it’s an absolute disgrace. To me…while he’s nowhere NEAR as good as Williams, I thought he was alright. I mean, he still has some of the same energy and I do give credit to the film that the film remembers his strong connection with Aladdin from the first movie. I don’t think he’s as funny, but he got a laugh out of me every once in a while. And then there’s Iago. I will admit, I do miss the chemistry he had with Jafar in the first movie, because I felt their relationship was more then the typical villain/henchmen duo, but I do think Iago was handled well in this movie. Seeing how he grows to respect Aladdin more and more when he stood up for him and saved him from the guards. And Iago properly redeems himself at the end by helping Aladdin and the others against Jafar. Speaking of which, Jafar is back and he’s awesome as ever. Jonathan Freeman is back to voice him and he is clearly having a freaking ball with it. He has the great mixture of being calm and sinister to diabolical and psychotic. Then there’s Abis Mal, who would later be a recurring villain in the TV series, he’s another funny sidekick, but not as good as Iago from the first movie. 4/5, Good
Final Rating:
While Aladdin and the King of Thieves is the superior Aladdin sequel, I still think this did an alright job. While the animation is crap, the writing knows when to be funny and heartfelt, and the characters while not as memorable in the first, still played their parts well. While this did start the whole line up of Disney Direct-to-VHS/DVD sequels, I don’t think it’s really fair to call it a bad movie. So, for me, I think it’s worth checking out! 4/5, Good
Alright then! Now, what’s my next review?

The background scenery is pretty well created as well as that intro song to the movie but the only thing truly saving this movie for me is jafars red genie form and the story line. The rest is shit piled upon shit.

This is the sequel that started a plague of medicore and really bad direct to VHS and DVD Disney sequels, this is one of the only ones that didn't completely take a dump all over the original's good reputation. As for Dan Castellaneta, I'll give him this much, he's just not good at being Robin Williams. The dialogue with the Genie not making pop culture references is fine, but only Robin Williams could make the references work.
Perhaps the best thing about this film is that it gave Jafar his own villan song (and a fairly catchy one at that). The one he was going to have in Aladdin got cut, so his unoffical villan song was the "Prince Ali" reprise.

The OG Disney Sequel.
It feels more like a pilot to the TV show. The story is okay but the visuals and orchestration suck!

Yeah, The NostalgiaChick said that two Aladdin sequels are actually the pilot for the t.v. show and the grand finale of said t.v. show.

I think it was meant to be a pilot. What was so bad about the orchestration? I thought it was decent.

It just sounds weak. There are so few instruments and none of it stands out IMO. I also didn't find the songs very memorable.
