Description Title: Thick Tree and the Moonlight
Date: 12/2000
Size: 18" x 24"
Material: Strathmore Drawing Paper
Medium: Dry - Vine and Compressed Charcoal

An assignment for Drawing 4A class to draw a tree from our own imagination without leaves. The tree was to be drawn without using lines, rather using the broad side of the charcoal to shade creating different values. A sense of space needed to be created utilizing contrast and masking techniques - light against dark or dark against light. The only requirments were to fill up the whole page, at least ten branches, and three distinct areas of foreground, middle, and background.

It started as just the tree, later I decided to add the moon for a subtle moody atmosphere, and a silhouette of the Headless Horseman for a Sleepy Hollow inspired touch.

I like the warrior at the background. But the trees's surfacs are very smooth.

BEAUTIFUL! I love the detail on the bark, and how the cast shadows of the branches sort of hugs the tree like that; establishing a mysteriously creepy atmosphere. The charcoal work here is absolutely amazing... Good stuff!
