The relative quiet of the darkness was suddenly shattered. There was a crescendoing roar as steel plates tore themselves apart, steam hissed out of broken pipes, smoke from the still-burning boilers roiled into the air, water quickly found its way into the ship's gaping maw.

From a lifeboat at this distance, and in the pitch black night, Monty couldn't see any of it. He had pleaded with the officers to let Anna take a seat with him, but she refused and disappeared from his sight.
