That is quite a shot. It's composed beautifully and balanced very well.
Don't worry about no super telephoto lens. When I first bought my SLR, I kept thinking about getting good telephoto, but I came to realize that I needed wide-angle far more than telephoto (especially if you're doing landscapes and such). Here, you were able to effectively capture the steam in the wind blowing off to one of the sides, and I think with a 500mm shot, the effect would be lessened somewhat.
Hower, I'm not sure the houses are adding very much to the shot, unless you want an emotional piece and display their "imminent doom". If that is the intention (which it doesn't seem to be), I believe it can be portrayed stronger by isolating one house in the shot. Also, the houses make the shot look a bit crooked (the eaves aren't horizontal). Without them, one wouldn't be able to tell even if it is.
