A picture that says a lot. but that also gives people the chance to judge. I jused to go to a riding school and I have taken care of a few private horses, mostly show- jumping horses. Then I started at a harnessracing stable. Many people feel sorry for the horses inn this sport, but it is here just as it is with anything. I actually feel sorry for the horses in many ridingschools. But I don't judge every riding school for treating their horses bad, just because I have seen cases of it. At the stable I work, the horses get carrots and apples very often, we walk with them and we give them pet them a lot. Don't judge the sport, judge the people that treat their horses badly- Because that you will find in ridingschools, dressage, western, show- jumping...

This picture has an enormous amount of emotion. From the horses eyes to his flared nostrils. Great shot!

Wow. This is the scene when the race is over and the crowd is roaring in the background...despite the look on the horses face, no one can see...Intense

Also: Is that cotton is its ears?

YSL In reply to blackdragon007 [2009-01-09 13:23:53 +0000 UTC]

Yup. Some of the harness racing horses have cotton or plugs inside ears. I really don't know what is it for.

My friend's horse uses those, it's so they don't spook at noise

blackdragon007 In reply to YSL [2009-01-10 23:26:28 +0000 UTC]

Cotton is also put in the ears of some bull fighting horses. So they won't spook from all the noise. Maybe the noise of the crowds are too nerve wracking for them? I dunno, that's weird.

They don't deserve to be treated like this!

Despicable image. But such is the life that photographers must look and not touch.

Ugh. Whoever the owner is should be introduced to Alexander Nevzorov. Actually, you should submit this to the public gallery on his site. I think it's called "the Horrors of the Equestrian Sport."

YSL In reply to DarkLegacy416 [2007-09-04 09:29:04 +0000 UTC]

Actually I know that gallery as well as the Nevzorov websites. Unfortunately I don't feel good contributing anything to their gallery. And why? Because some of my friends photos were already put there without any permission, and what is more important, I'm not a big fan of Nevzorov and I use bits on my horses. Of course I don't tolerate horse abuse, but still, way of Nevzorov is not something I would like to perform when I work with my horses.

Ah, well to each his own I guess. It sucks about your friend's pictures.
Though, in my own personal opinion, there's nothing quite like the feeling of trotting around on top of a 1100 pound animal with no restraint and having them trust you so completely that you feel safe and can direct them almost simply by thinking about it. Or being able to go out in the field and "dance" and play horsey tag. But everyone has their own opinion, (my trainer is a very traditional hunter-type, and when I ride her horse, I have to use a bit) so whatever works for you is good.

This is a gorgeous photo ... It really sums up the turmoil that most sport horses go through. This is one of those photos that are worth a thousand words. It tells a story, all in one split second captured.

May I have permission to draw this some time, perhaps?

Sure, no problem at all, just give me link to your drawing. :] And by the way, what story tells this photo?

BerylRoll05 [2007-08-14 22:49:37 +0000 UTC]

but most racehorse owners don't treat all horses like this...it really depends, which is my opinion. but i should really know how the track life screws horses up so much...when i got my mare a year ago she wouldn't eat treats...she wouldn't stand still when you petted her...and she wouldn't let you touch her face...i felt so bad...but now she looks for treats and walks right up to me and wants to be loved...i'm happy that she's happy now...

YSL In reply to BerylRoll05 [2007-08-14 22:54:54 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm a bit surprised. I've seen many spoiled and nervous horses but it is the first time I've ever heard about a horse that wouldn't eat treats. Well, I'm not a big fan of harness racing (I prefer CDA) but still I agree, that not every single racehorse owner treat them badly, but from the other side, some people think that putting so much gear on a horse is already an act of cruelty.

BerylRoll05 In reply to YSL [2007-08-14 23:44:16 +0000 UTC]

yeah...because my trainer's wife, who's a vet, went out to the owner who use ot own Jewel to take care of some of his horses and he said, "That horse was a piece of shit...she wouldn't run to save her life" well that's fine...she may of not wanted to run for him but she's the best eventer i've had...

yes, I'm glad we bought her, she's now become a pasture horse (atleast for now, she has trouble keeping weight, but once she gets a good amount of weight I'll ride her again on trails) and she's given me a wonderful warmblood mare that has a wonderful personality and a willingness to learn and do well.

What can I say. It's just the "magic" of harness racing where most of the horses look like that after the race.

I really have to learn to collect al lmy thoughts in just one post.

The strain and the tension in this picture!

I used to have an off the track harness racer. She was a rescue. And boy did track life MESS. Her. UP!
They had her so pumped full of stuff, that when she came to us, she had year round heats and the mood swings to go with them. Poor mare was a moody basket case!

I really don't like the way sport horses are looked at as machines nowadays... I'm nog so good at english, but what I'm trying to say is that this photo really shows how it is... And thats not good. I really can't stand the way they treat the "trotters" in harness racing. Not at all.
