Description

Ran Nakahara | The Judge (c) yukkurionion

"Calm."

MAHOU
Mahou Name: The Judge
Alias: The Highest Court
Level: 1
Description:
The Judge holds a tall stature and a slightly boyish appearance. She always appears to be floating until she sits down or is prompted into battle — but it’s only ever gliding, never high enough to consider she has the power of “flight.” Her most distinct features are her elven ears,  her mask and her eyes — both holding a deep hue of black, but contain a slight variation of color. With her mask, the three gaps at the center will glow into an icy blue when she uses her power. When she stops using her power, it fades back into its neutral, cave-like darkness. Her eyes contain a thin swirl varying in the hue of red and blue — depending on whether she’s using her power. (Blue typically means she is.)

When her cloak is moved aside, her “boots” are heavily detailed armor — looking ever so intimidating, especially due to the length and the thickness it adds to her legs. She carries a rather deep voice — which adds to her androgynous appearance. She has a ribbon with a rose on top that matches the hue of her hair. In game, she carries a calm disposition, but once Ran transforms into The Judge — it will be difficult to keep up the persona she’s built and idolized for her mahou.

Info:
Power: Cryostasis; the power to lower temperatures and freeze both inanimate and animate matter.

 Level 1: Preservation
In the beginning, she lowers her temperature to the point where she grows a layer of ice and frost over her person. At level 2, the thickness of this ice and frost grows much larger - to the scale of a block of ice.

Limitations:
            - She cannot move. She must remain still in this form.
            - Anyone with super strength or has the power to manifest a strong force can probably break through the ice at level 2 with enough hits.

 Level 3: Frozen Arms
Can freeze certain parts of her body and virtually turn them into a blunt object as a means of attack.

Limitation:
            - Overtime, the ice will inevitably shatter with enough hits. In other words, it's not as sturdy as other mahou's permanent weapons.

 Level ???*: Stalemate
Can now lower the temperatures of other matter.

Limitation:
            - She must make physical contact with the object or person.

 Level ???*: Ice Bending
Can now control ice at her will.

Limitation:
            - There must be some kind of liquid nearby.

*Level undetermined because unsure of what the max level is and how I should space it out to be more fair.

Weapon: N/A

HUMAN
Name: Ran Nakahara 【蘭・中原】
Age: 17
Birthday: September 24th
Gender: Female
Height: 5'4" | 162.5 cm

Personality:
( + ) | Alert; Canny; Capable; Individualistic
( = ) | Systematic; Studious; Skeptical; Frugal
( ー ) | Cynical; Incurious; Offhand; Sarcastic

Considering she lived in a shady neighborhood and an overly-rowdy school in America, she's bound to be alert of her surroundings and more cautious or skeptical of who she meets, trusts, and make trades with. And by trade, there's bound to be some exchanges of homework, lunch, money, clothes within a school - though Japan seems entirely different from what she can see. Despite it being against school rules to sell things to other classmates, Ran practices in the act.

Considering she lived in a shady neighborhood and an overly-rowdy school in America, she's bound to be alert of her surroundings and cautious of who she meets, trusts, and make trades with. Where she shops and what kind of food she intakes are all calculated (not as a means of calorie intake, but rather money purposes), as she's rather canny in which she holds good judgment especially in money or business matters -- her frugal trait especially shows here since she also pays attention to the sales, prices, and deals of where she shops and takes advantage of them. She's independent and capable of handling things herself, much prefers to practice things alone, rather than within a group if possible.

She's rather cynical, considering how she's observed her generation's behavior and the not so role-model behavior of some of the older generations and believes the mistakes that happen in a relationship is always because someone wants more of something - more than they actually need. When she's mad at you, it's clear. She's more sarcastic in a way made to provoke you and she becomes more disinterested and dismissive about your issues or problems.

Likes:
 Jewish food

Considering she lived in a Jewish neighborhood during her time in
America, she’s bound to grow accustomed and like Jewish cuisine.

 Big, furry spiders

“They have more character than a black spider with a red
                hourglass on its ass.”

 Shows showcasing animals, insects, etc.

Finds them informative, interesting, and the only kind of
documentaries she’d re-watch over and over again.

 Romance stories; novels/manga/anime/etc.

Useful to pass the time - and also it's something Ran and her
siblings heavily invest their time together on.

Dislikes:
People with No Sense of Humor

Not really interested in people who are always serious or can’t
                take a joke.

 Drugs; cigarettes; weed in particular

“I had enough of smelling those in middle school and high
                school.”

Writing essays; anything to do with heavy Japanese literature

Has trouble with kanji and still working on her penmanship in
Japanese. Her English handwriting is good though.

 Black widows

                “They’re small and  overrated.”

History:
Ran Nakahara was born in Japan with one brother and one adopted sister. Both her father and mother are Japanese and her sister is American, having been adopted during their long stay in America. Much of Ran’s childhood and earlier teenage life resided in America and so, to no one’s surprise, it’s inevitable that she would more or less be Americanized. She’s still fluent in Japanese, for it’s the main language spoken in the household, but considering most of her writing and speaking outside of the house is English, she had some trouble writing and reading in the language as she grew older.

At around the age of nine, both her parents wanted to adopt. They’ve been considering it for quite some time, and although a small pit of worry and jealousy grew in her stomach — at the end of the day, that adopted sister of hers was more pitiful than she could fathom. She had a typical sibling relationship with her brother, which grew to be more mellow as she grew tired of fighting — both verbally and non-verbally. Her adopted sister, on the other hand, was much more timid, and did not speak much or talk out of turn. In fact, it was either Ran or her brother that usually spoke up for her.

She resided in Brooklyn, New York — accompanied by a predominantly Jewish neighborhood. It’s to no one’s surprise that she has taken a liking to their cuisine. Though slightly outside her neighborhood — basically, the walk between the bus and her home is slightly alarming, the schools she’s attended haven’t been the most praiseworthy.

Her elementary school was standard — much like any other, and it’s quite difficult to tell what level of “rowdy” is too much when it comes to a bunch of kids. Her middle school, however, there were much too many times when the teachers’ faces would grow beet red and she would no longer see their faces the next day. Of course, her parents still had some level of expectations for her to do well in school and make a living, hence her grades are up to par. Now despite the constant cliche of “the smartest kid getting bullied for being the odd one out” — that is certainly not the case for Ran nor any of the smart kids in her class or her school. Truth be told, you’re only bullied if you’re being a smartass.

And that day came in high school. Unfortunately.

No one really calls a bunch of bad kids “delinquents” where she went, but it is a fitting label. Now, make no mistake, Ran is not the kind to hang around that crowd — or any kind of crowd that would ruin her reputation or get a lecture-long scolding from her mother,  but one way or another— especially when there’s so many of them — she’s bound to butt heads with one group of “delinquents.”

In her school, there is a much-needed exaggeration for much of the drama, much of the stories and gossip passed around. If there wasn’t enough exaggeration and false rumors and unfaithful “lovers” wandering about, how could this school get any less boring? It was such an average school, not remarkable in any aspect — not specialized, not celebrated at any level of caliber.

And with this unhealthy practice, several social groups formed! So much drama, so much unnecessary fights outside and inside the school — so much gossip and whispering, so much exchange of lipstick and makeup — so much talk of weight — so much talk of who’s tougher, who’s bronzier — so much, so much unnecessary debates over nothing piled over nothing and nothing and nothing and nothing.

Since Ran kept mostly to herself and kept in touch with very few friends (quality over quantity), she was one to eavesdrop. (On the side, she would play lots of mobile games to pass the time, but they had a strict rule over using your phone in school — even when it was homeroom or break time!) Lots of conversation slipped inside her ear and stored inside her brain. This became entertainment. But soon this entertainment grew bland with its repetitive problems — that could be easily solved if some information was laid out without all the unnecessary bits this telephone game has accomplished.

Finally, after butting heads with a leader of one of the social groups, to no one’s surprise — she received a dramatic slap from the leader. In retaliation, Ran snapped back and started rattling off all she’s heard of the entire fiasco — and with all this adrenaline and pent-up frustration building up, she began to point at several individuals — listing out their problems and criticizing their habits. She admitted, of course, as a disclaimer of her nosy nature, but she says in defense that it’s becoming really difficult to block out all the nonsense when everywhere she goes is just nonsense, nonsense, NONSENSE.

A dramatic turnabout transpired!

Now wouldn’t you know it, all this rattling, all this EXPOSURE might’ve pissed a bunch of people off — but after about a week, Ran was actually…. celebrated!

You read right! She was celebrated! She was celebrated for having cleared up many misunderstandings, for repairing relationships — both romantic and platonic — and she was suddenly regarded as an adult — no, more than an adult — a JUDGE!

Much like any earned nickname in school — be it willingly or accidental — the nickname started to stick. “Morning, Judge!”, “Do you want something to eat, Your Honour?”,”Judge, I don’t really get this question…”, “Judge, pass me the ball!” It wasn’t a derogatory nickname per say, but it was weird — it was weird especially when they not only called her Judge but STILL proceeded to go to her for any problems — be it personal or public.

It was foreign, and it wasn’t too annoying — but after seeing many unnecessary fights, she was more annoyed at their impulsive personalities than she was at their constant requests for help or assistance. To her, it was like cleaning the trash — the unnecessary, selfish bacteria that grew in any kind of relationship. Sometimes she felt like the matchmaker, the mediator, the teacher, the therapist — at the very least, it helped the time pass by. And it forced her to be more sociable. Even if she wouldn’t admit it, the school did start becoming less lonely after her outburst.

After a certain point in her life, her parents decided to move back to Japan — for a couple of reasons, mostly because of financial reasons. It was a bit sad, bidding everyone in her high school an early goodbye and her neighbors as well. She was more surprised when her classmates started to cry upon her early departure. It was a bit awkward, but she managed to pat everyone’s back, bidding them all farewell after exchanging social media. First selfie she’s ever took. Life achievement award.

But with the absence of the drama and the constant rambling and asking for help, she focused her attention more on mobile games. It was also a good stress reliever, considering her brother and her sister weren’t too happy about moving either. And wouldn’t you know it — eventually she’d find out about this super-duper-ultra popular game — “Mahou Project!” And of course, due to its highly-addictive gameplay, cute aesthetics, and a wide-range of character customization!

She grinded and grinded — she bought more items — killed more demons — tried to get her friends from America to join, but they weren’t as active or addicted as she was. It was a cute game with lots of admirable features. Soon she would rank in the top 10% of all players — and it would surprise her quite a bit, considering most people default into thinking the people at the top 10% are usually either hackers or have dedicated their lives to this game.

Little did she know, that would also be the case for her.

"I wish everyone would just chill the fuck out."

Extras:
Her birthday is September 24th because on September 24th, 1789, Congress passed the act that officially created the federal judiciary system that included the Supreme Court and other federal courts.

When she was in America, “Judge” used to be her nickname in high school.

Ran’s power is a bit of a pun but also reflects her desire for everyone to freeze and cool down.

The Judge’s pose on the application was initially intended to portray someone of calm character, but instead looks like someone telling you to “freeze” or “stop.”

Ran Nakahara has light brown hair and dark brown eyes.

Ran does not get seasick and is not afraid of heights.
