"Rurouni Kenshin is one of the only series that has left a lasting emotional impact on me. I was especially drawn to the OVA series which detailed Kenshin’s life 10 years prior to the main anime series. I feel battousai Kenshin is one of the most complex and well developed characters that I’ve come across in anime history. Previously called Shinta, Kenshin was saved from slavery and brought up learning the way of the sword. With his idealistic views and deadly skills, he quickly walked down a bloody path by taking part in one of Japan’s most well-known revolutions. Even though Kenshin has violently murdered countless people with nonchalance, I believe he still remains a child at heart. At only 16, he desperately tries to make sense of the world and was forced to be more mature that he is. Inside, he is painfully aware of his actions, but tries hold on to his beliefs in hopes that it will justify his actions. When he meets Tomoe, he gets a brief taste of happiness in that peaceful cottage they shared and takes refuge from the world in her arms, but all that comes crashing down soon after. Incredibly tragic and devastatingly enlightening, Kenshin realizes the true consequences of his mindless killing and changes his ways in order to atone for the sins he committed. "
