From my experience, it's pronounced "Base." In MM8, it was pronounced as the fish, but the voice acting in that game was terrible, and if it were reliable, it'd be "docta wahwee" instead of "Dr. Wily." Also in the game, I've heard the voice actors slip up in the actual in game dialogue, and since it was kept in the final game, I can assume that the producers never bothered to correct their mistakes, and as such, also assume that their unchecked mistakes also allowed for mispronunciations of the character's names, including Duo's (Pronounced Dwo instead of Doo-Oh), Dr Wily's and, of course, Bass's.

Also, Bass's name goes along with Treble, his wolf (and yes he IS a wolf, not a dog), which are both clefs in the musical scale, which also goes along with the on-running musical references in the series (Rock, Roll, Blues, Tango, Reggae, ect ect.) And for those of you who say it doesn't count because they took out the refs in the English version, that's not true at all. Mega Man was "Rock" before he was transformed into a combat robot, and I could also argue, since we don't know much about Protoman's past, that he could have been called "Blues" before his transformation as well.

My third piece of information to back up this argument is in the Mega Man EXE Anime, the English dub pronounced it as "Base". Since the anime relied a lot more on accurate voice acting than the game did, if this was a mistake it would most definitely have been corrected before the episode aired. The game only mentioned Bass by name once in the cutscenes. Bass's name was used repeatedly in the Anime, leaving less room for error.

Based on this evidence and logic, I pronounce his name "Base." There's simply not enough evidence to support it the other way.

technically its bass (like bace) because its ALL music based, but i always wanna say bass like the fish cause i say it more so im more inclined to say it and because i get screwed up im like TO HELL WITH ALL OF YOU, FORTE IS WHAT IM CALLING HIM >D

I use to say Bass as in the fish.. but then I heard from someone else it's pronounced like the guitar, so I went with that. But now I just call them by their Japanese names.. unless of course I'm talking to someone who's not familiar with those. >w>;
I'll be talking about Rockman, and someone will have no clue what I'm saying, so I facepalm and say Megaman instead so they'll understand.

Sometimes I wish that one music company hadn't been such jerks about sharing the same name so it would have STAYED as Rockman and people would't be so confused. =_=;

Pfft. I always go with their Japanese names since it's the set I'm accustomed to, first game being ROCKman 8 and all. >.> And it gives the musical pun naming theme more sense.
If I have to go with their English names, I'd go with Bass pronounced as 'base'. Bass and Treble, like that. The dub is horrible. Why call Forte a fish???

So, Forte...Get the fish and smack the dub's face in with it. Keep the guitar; it's cool.
