Well, I think that the Death Note cancels out the Geass because the person's gonna die if the DN's used on him and the Geass can't prevent death (Case in point: Light using the Geass on Shirley.). At least Lelouch's Geass anyway.
Geass, power of the kings, and Death Note, the tool of the reapers. that sounds cool together.
Now if Light or Lelouch had either they would be unstoppable.

Hmn... I think of it as this way: The person can be Geassed while under effect of the Death Note, but they can never die. If Lelouch says 'shoot yourself', maybe it'll just end up as a wound that does not effect the Death Note's orders.

Yeah, in a fist-fight Light would win hands down, but if Lelouch uses his Geass...
I'm more of the opinion that since the Death Note's the tool of the reaper, the person will die. This is based on the fact that a normal Death God can use the note and it'll still kill the person. Suzaku will possibly die one day. Anyway, let's just say that the Geass cancels out the Death Note, then if you used it on your soldiers you couldn't use it again to command them to be loyal to you.

Actually, Death Note ends in 2013, while Area 11 was conquered this year. And Lelouch's story begins it 2017. 
And that's probably why they need rewriting to cross over.
