While many of us enjoy the luxury of watching TV on our couch with a cold can of soda or beer, the ice caps are melting at an alarming rate. Polar bears that need the ice to hunt and survive are drowning or starving; sometimes forced to search through dumpsters to survive. www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news…

Global warming is undeniably here. 2000-present date was the warmest decade on record worldwide www.epa.gov/climatechange/indi… . This is not part of the natural climate change but a human induced and an abnormally accelerated increase in temperature. Waiting for the countdown until all the ice caps and glacier have melted and water level has risen is not an option.

Many of us think that helping to prevent global warming is just about driving a hybrid car, or getting solar panels, which most people can't afford, so why bother?

While fossil fuel burning cars are a huge source of green house gasses, many other things also add up to create the problem. The manufacturing of anything takes up energy, which is usually created by burning fossil fuel like gas and coal. Relying on oil also lets big oil companies like BP and ExxonMobile get away with oil spills time and time again (with the most recent large spill in Yellowstone national park billingsgazette.com/news/local… ) With that in mind, I'm not saying we should give up everything we own and live in the wild, but any amount of reduce, reuse, and recycle will lessen the amount of new products that needs manufacturing. And that's something we can all do.

Taking public transportation, carpooling, or riding a bike are a cost efficient and healthy way to save energy and money. Even eating less meat (especially cows and pigs), can greatly help because it takes more energy to raise a cow than some crops of the same nutritional value. Cows are also a huge source of methane, which is another type of greenhouse gases that's responsible for global warming.

There are many other small things that we can all do help the environment like turning off the lights when we're not in the room, or not using the AC or heater if we could just take off or put on a jacket instead.

Change is not waiting for the scientists and government to come up with the solution, change starts with the little things we can do everyday.

It has come to my attention that my work closely resembles this one pepey.deviantart.com/art/globa… which was made 2 years before mine. I have never seen this until after I posted my drawing, and people started telling me about the similarities between the two. I did not copy the idea and the similarities are purely coincidental. Congrats to pepey who came up with it first, but please do not assume that I plagiarized.

dude, love the art, but global warming is fake. read up better sources online...solar activity is at an all time low and the Arctic region just recorded the lowest temperature in history..try www.sott.net

I don't think a website is the best thing to place your trust into. Global warming is a real problem that needs to be dealt with.

You do understand that you're wrong.. right? Just because Solar activity is low and the Arctic region has recorded is lower temperature doesn't mean that climate change isn't present. The climate is changing and if we don't do something now, in the future we may live in a much different world than we do now. Look into it more there are some really good sources of information out there

All of you talk about polar bears... but there are so many more animals that will suffer... and from them perishing... the trophic chain will be heavily affected.

Warshin In reply to Sandra-Floree [2014-01-25 14:02:07 +0000 UTC]

The polar bears were chosen here for the composition itself, to combine the water from the melting ice with the sandglass. So don't think we all talk only about polar bears, I'm sure most of us are aware of the many other animals that are endangered.

I was just learning that it wasn't global warming, but the jet stream in the Arctic breaking and the cold air going down to the central places and whatnot and the hot air going to the polar areas. Which is just as bad.

Vol-Jin In reply to ??? [2014-01-10 23:49:06 +0000 UTC]

I personally believe that the Earth, through its billions of year of existence, has gone through several great eras of cold and hot, and this is just another descent into a hot era. However, there -are- things we can do to lighten the blast a little, plus saving energy helps everyone out in the end. nice message

wowow i'm glad I'm seeing more of these pieces that bring awareness to the impact of climate change on sustainable development... even with all those other solutions that people put in resolutions, I still strongly believe in legitimately effective steps taken to bring awareness to the oblivious.

other than that, i love the way you exhibited the idea. people really ought to be more aware of what they're doing to this planet

I'm not saying we should give up everything we own and live in the wild, but any amount of reduce, reuse, and recycle will lessen the amount of new products that needs manufacturing. And that's something we can all do.

You're right about recycling preventing new products from being needed. However, it depends on how the product is recycled as to how good for the environment it really is. Every time we use a recycling plant we use precious water to form the items into new products as well as much more energy being needed to create the recycled item then the new one. So yes we have less items by recycling, but at the cost of greater resources used.

On the other hand we can still recycle without the recycling plants. If we can re-use the product without changing the product, then we'll solve two problems, reducing the oil and resources used, and reducing the amount of products needing to be produced.

Also, global warming (and the associated degradation of the ozone layer) doesn't just make the world warmer; it makes temperatures more extreme because there is no natural barrier that keeps the earth at the cozy temperatures it's supposed to be at. So for those who argue that "hey, it's the coldest it's ever been this year- no way can there be such thing as global warming!" eat. your. words. >

Emberguard In reply to Dragonflysunning [2014-01-05 21:15:16 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I saw a program a while back that proved global warming has been happening for the last 20,000 years and that soon we'll be due for an ice age.

That being said we still need to look after the planet, regardless of the reason. The problem is finding ways to do so without creating new or worse problems.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dragonflysunning In reply to Emberguard [2014-01-06 15:12:46 +0000 UTC]

What they can't figure out though, is why we haven't started into another ice age…. and I know, things like biodiesel- which is made of plant materials- doesn't solve all our problems, as it creates new ones after solving the old. We add a little to regular diesel, but still- we don't have a solution. It's really hard to think about, the fact that there just isn't an obvious magical solution.

I love all of your global awareness work- they express a lot more than what can be said in words, and deliver a powerful emotional punch with it. I wish more people could see how we're destroying this beautiful planet, but the truth is, we don't need numbers- we need change. Just by changing your personal daily habits, or even to go so far as to invent a more earth-friendly means of transportation, fuel, or deliver talks to people all around the world- both make a difference and the more people who take it upon themselves to make this difference, the greater chance of success we'll have!
