Description Mostly a test how bigger gif files are handled by DA (and my watchers)
(But still quite low FPS (just this recording))

So basically a quick made scene to show what I do/try at the moment

Well tried a few things but at the end much bussy work and technical problems with the rpg maker... so the whole thing fell asleep for a while^^
There was the idea to use unity for a while now but I just recently found the time and mood to try a few things with it (not much done beside 2d animation test stuff^^) looks promising so far...
So not sure if there will be ever a game but I am still keep trying  (if nothing else at least usefull to try 2D skeletar rigging animation stuff )

Yeah there are a lot retro 2d sidescroller/topdown/isometric games since they are "more or less" easy to make (but thats shouldn´t be a problem if you make this just for fun )
In my case more or less a similar "drawn retro" style, based on my inability to do diffrent/better (but also a way to use my drawing experienece), I am happy if this ends with something at least slightly recognizable^^
Also there is still the possiblity to differ from other via gameplay or game theme, for my part arent ther much rpg like, daily life simulations with +18 elements... so still a market niche (even with similar artstyle^^)

On what kind of game do you work? something finished so far? What style do you want to use? Always interesting to hear/exchange experiences of/with other people^^

KobaltSteel In reply to Yvem [2019-01-07 00:14:20 +0000 UTC]

I guess I will not use RPG Maker... I was going to use Unity anyway.

I suppose it doesn't matter if they are just for fun... but why not experiment with other art styles? Those who do experiment with other styles, I gravitate towards them more. My problem is that the 8/16-bit retraux art style is just generic; you are right that gameplay and mechanics take precedent, but aesthetics are important as well.

I am making a platformer that would be split between a traditional Megaman-style side-scroller and a top-down Zelda-style dungeon crawler. I want to try and use a coloring book aesthetic, as seen with games like Super Mario World 2 and Kirby's Dreamland 3; I have to learn how to do this style, though... or just commission people for this.

I have completed a prototype of the side-scroller part, to which I have made a video of this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3RJ8Z…

However, certain feautres are missing, such as the intended top-down segments, as I did not program for them yet.

As said befor also cant recommend the rpg maker if you want something with a look unlike the usual maker style^^
Seems I take my unity experiments from the complet other side... my first tries are mostly what I can do with the animation tools of unity (Not so familiar with programing in general so far^^)
I have tried some kind of 2D cut out stuff and rigged a easy to adjust bone skeleton (BoneRig ) with it...
more or less ready to use ingame  for animations like in this first try ---> UntityTestAnimation

Your game idea sounds classic (not a bad thing in my oppinion) stands and falls with your leveldesign and gamplay ,
also a bit more complicated to use two different gamplay approaches at ones... I will try to keep an eye on it
What kind of senario/story do you have in mind for it btw?

As far as the art style goes, looks like I intend a similar aesthetic like you^^ (maybe I can even help you with my limited knowledge, show/tell you how I would make it or even assist in smaller things...^^)

Your prototype doesn´t look bad (even if maybe a bit angular.. ) nice to see something "finished" to get a idea of your intention/goal

KobaltSteel In reply to Yvem [2019-01-08 04:30:11 +0000 UTC]

IT'S CLASSIC!? NOOOOOOO... actually it did start out as a retro throwback to NES games, namely Mario Bros 3. It is fairly complicated, but the reason for the two gameplay styles was in order to make it stand out from the others; the game needed to have it's own identity in gameplay or else it would get lost in the sea of other simple platformers.

The story is supposed to be simple; the main character (a frog in classy clothing) has to rescue an island from an evil pirate by acquiring six spectral-colored objects that will grant him access to the center of the island. There are to be seven worlds with 4 levels each, to which six are playable from the get-go and players must complete the six worlds to access the seventh world.

Sure, I would like some help with that aesthetic

You know what... I think you are right; this game is rather complicated... perhaps too complicated for a first attempt... I might rework the game into something else with what I already have, but I won't abandon the project... I'll just leave it in the backburner.

Yvem In reply to KobaltSteel [2019-01-08 21:13:31 +0000 UTC]

Well the story sound even more classic... you really have to thing about some gameplay twists (beside the art style) if you still want to  make a outstanding game
But seriously dont set your goals to high and expect to make a oustanding game on the frist try, that maybe just ends up demotivate you
Focus on what you like to do the most and I hope the rest will regulate itself^^
(...but who am I to juge, the goal for my game is also so far-fetched that there will be nearly for sure never a finshed result^^
...maybe the most importent thing is what we lear on the way... )
But still like your classy frog idea, enables a few possibilities for frog related jump or else abilities

As far as help with the aesthetic goes, have tried the Anima2D tool to produce the animation linked in my last post, if you are interested in something similar looking I can sure lend a helping hand

NNNNNOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! You are right, I need to think about unique elements.

Well, I'll just have to work off of the 2D scripts already written; I have several characters in my arsenal, so I can experiment a little bit with some concepts before getting to that complex endeavor.

I'll take a look at that tool when I get the chance

Are you doing this all by yourself? Will this be a full thing?

Yvem In reply to FoxPeach [2018-07-29 16:48:27 +0000 UTC]

Hey you are still alive?
(I really thought about sending you a note to ask if everything is ok, but then I´ve seen your journal about moving... already done and settled in so far?^^)

But back to topic... as always happy that you likes it so far
Yeah mostly done by myself... or at least everything you can see was drawn by me!!
(just the programming framework is done via the rpg maker, since I have no clue about programming...^^)

There is still the idea for a bigger "full thing" but I am not sure if I can stay motivated enough to finish it (still a lot of work to do and so many other things to consider...^^ )
So I cant promisse something but maybe with a few breaks inbetween to catch air I will end up with something aceptable...
(I will send you a note so if you want to try what I have done so far... )

FoxPeach In reply to Yvem [2018-07-30 08:29:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I'm still alive. Moving has been a pain and not going well, I haven't even moved yet

that's how much of a pain it is.

It looks great, I can tell by how it looks that everything was drawn by you.

It doesn't even look like RPG maker, I think you've done an excellent job.

(Not that rpg maker looks bad, but not using premade assets for everything looks

better than grabbing every free model.)

You could always work on it in spare time if you feel like you need to focus on other things in the meantime.

It looks like a fun little project and I'm sure i'd love how it turns out if there is ever a finished product!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yvem In reply to FoxPeach [2018-07-30 21:31:31 +0000 UTC]

Well that somehow dont sound all goes like intended... do you mind if I ask what went wrong?^^
I just hope you can keep up your head and that this "pain" will end sooner or later

Again thanks (yeah my "style" is maybe slightly recognisable... we will see if this will be something good or bad )
First I have tried the premade stuff, but doesnt liked this "standart"and especially overused look.... ^^
so I had the crazy idea to try something isometric ... it endet wit a lot more work than intendet but the the outcome doesnt look this bad? (not sure why I kept using the rpg maker )

Thanks for the try to motivate me, lets see how it will go on
(always open for ideas and suggestions so dont hold it back )

FoxPeach In reply to Yvem [2018-08-02 06:04:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.... I don't really wanna talk about it too much, but some dude bailed on a deal.

Same, thank you for the kind words I hope everything gets sorted soon.

I think it's a good thing
It's a good kind of recognizable. I think you made a good choice in not going with

the 'standard' art.

Isometric is pretty cool, but yeah it looks like a lot of work goes into making it work properly.

(Cuz RPG maker is easy to use? I dunno)

NP!
I bet it'll be good and even if you don't wanna finish it you've gain great learning ex

for the future.

Yvem In reply to FoxPeach [2018-08-03 12:18:33 +0000 UTC]

Understandable (I am really sorry if you felt unpleasant about my question)
I will keep my fingers crossed that everything will be solved quick (and in a for you satisfying way )

Easier to use, at least on the short run, but also limited in features...
I thought about try unity engine but to start all over again both with the game AND a new software to work with... I still struggle^^

Thanks for the motivating words
(my progress stuck a bit at the moment because of repetitive animation stuff and a temperature of 35°C here, so I need every consolation I can get^^)
This WE I will maybe have a bit time to go on working...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FoxPeach In reply to Yvem [2018-08-03 16:33:58 +0000 UTC]

Oh it's no issue to ask, I'm very nosy myself.

Don't worry

Unity might be harder to work with what you're going for in the type of

game you're making. Although I don't know much about this, so.....

NP! (Yeah I get that, the dull drone of repetitiveness. Ooofff, 35°C, you must be dying.

I feel ya though, it's been very hot here too. Maybe we can share an ice pop~

Yvem In reply to FoxPeach [2018-08-03 23:40:28 +0000 UTC]

At least I downloaded and instaled the base unity version (since free to use)... a short glimpse cant hurt, even if I wont use it^^

Good to hear that I am not alone with this misery (Now two weeks daily above 30°C!!!!)
So a ice pop would be nice...
...but the share part could be difficult (still a long run from US to germany^^)
let me know if you`re in town next time

FoxPeach In reply to Yvem [2018-08-05 10:21:34 +0000 UTC]

True, it really can't hurt and maybe you'll use it in the future for

another project. Experience is still experience, yo!

Yeah the heat seems to be kicking everyone. RIP

will do

Wow! This is really cool! I love the classic RPG exploring combined with the full body dialogue portraits.

Brings me back to creating little interactive "games" in Flash... What engine/platform/language did you create this in?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yvem In reply to Tristikov [2018-07-01 20:48:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, glad to hear that you like it so far^^
(Yeah no real "gamplay" ideas beside this "classic RPG exploring" and "chatting" so far, the usual rpg maker battle stuff seems not to fit so I have to think about something more fitting^^)

I actually just experimented a bit with the RPG maker MV (I thought thats maybe something easy to use especially since I have no programming or coding experiences^^)
I tired a few things but was not happy with the generic rpg maker look, so I ended up trying how I could fit in my "drawing style" and modded the s*** out of it...^^
And this is the result so far... more effort than expected and planed but I like the result so far.. lets see how far I will come before I lose the motivation

TheParaceratherium In reply to Yvem [2018-07-09 10:21:52 +0000 UTC]

Maybe you should try Unity? I haven't actually used it, but I heard of a few people who use that and say it's not so hard. Plus it's open source so it's a free game engine too.

Also I just wanted to say that this look absolutely fantastic. This is also really cute.

Yvem In reply to TheParaceratherium [2018-07-09 12:32:25 +0000 UTC]

Hmm havent tried a different engine since it all resulted out of my idea to just "try" the rpg maker^^
I will maybe take a look on it to see if this is a easier solution, but since  what I have allready done so far in the rpg maker...  I am not sure that I will still switch

Thanks, happy to hear that you like it so far
(lets see what you will say to the other version )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yvem In reply to ARCR-CRic [2018-06-27 22:34:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the feedback^^
Maybe not the final font, I just searched for something free to use that looks a bit more "dynamic" and less "angular" than the standart one
The hard to read part in the gif is maybe also caused by the bad frame rate and my intent to slightly rush through it (to keep the duration low)
(maybe the next gif will have a better quality since DA seems to have no problems to also "stream" larger gifs^^)

I will keep an eye on it and also adjust or change the font later, again thanks for your suggestion, it helps a lot (keep up the feedback )

ARCR-CRic In reply to Yvem [2018-12-22 02:27:07 +0000 UTC]

Sure thing! I thought that this one wasn't the final font but decided to point it anyway just to try helping on what might work better for the final version .

Since it is medieval, perhaps a bold illuminated letter style font would be great though a simpler one because those tend to be crazy complex .

Looking forward for more previews .
