Description Her Master had warned her about him. “Don’t allow him to strike first. If you leave him any opening, he’ll seize the opportunity. He’ll create a new set of probabilitie if needed. Don’t toy with him like you did with the others. You must kill him fast."

And so Layla did.

In one swift jump, she crossed the open space that separated them and threw her right leg forward to land a lethal side kick on his head with her knee. The impact as well as the horrible sound of bone being crushed told her that her blow had been successful; blood splashed on her thigh, as she sent his body crash against an emergency white van that was parked right in front of the railings. The sword clanked on the pavement; her enemy collapsed without a scream. It was over.

#58 in the 100 themes challenge , drawn with Access's Doubt & Trust looping in the background for... as many hours as were needed to complete the picture. I'm not sure the lyrices are a good fit, but the music sure helped me a lot. Inspiration works in very odd ways sometimes; the rythm and melody just got me into drawing this picture, which is much more dynamic that whatever else I've done before, I think.

And insomnia power is back! Otherwise I wouldn't have had the time to draw & colour that picture. (Oh, but to finally get a FULL night of sleep!...)

English:

Layla and Marek, February 6, 1989, in Paris.

Layla was a strange woman who acted as both bodyguard and assassin for Louis Valdemar, the renegade True Names mage turned Necromancer. Warned by her Master that his enemies would come and seek him, she waited for them to show up. Marek was the first one, and so he took the brunt of her fighting skills right in the face. Layla intended to kill him, and sure she did (she finished him off with two bullets at blank point in the head ). But of course, since it's Marek, the bastard never stays dead for long. No need to say that dear Layla was up for a nasty surprise...

Surprise, surprise, Layla...

Reference from a "How to draw manga" book about drawing fighting characters. Also an attempt at doing a night picture, because I seriously suck at shading that kind of scene. The full moon is technically WRONG (02/06/1989 was a dark moon), but I needed a light source, and I don't remember if there are street lights right in the middle of Parvis Notre-Dame, so... Let's say it, uh, some kind of trick due to all the magical energies flowing in the air on that night. T_T

Excellent!

Thanks! Now I hope I'll be able to draw such things without using refs anymore.

That's always a good

I'm trying to do more
unreferenced pictures too.

Well I tend to think that if I don't manage to do it myself, using a ref is okay (better than not learning anything, right?). But after a while, one should be able to get away from refs, if only because it always feels better to think "yes, it's 150% mine". ^^

Merci (et pour la fave aussi, au passage). Heureusement qu'il y a les références, quand même...

Reference use is good practice. I still use references from time to time (especially with backgrounds)

Uh, yeah, backgrounds are something I need to work on more; as a result, I still need references pretty much all the time. *grumbles*

Oui, heu... j'ai rajouté des lignes de mouvement, haha. ^^

J'ai encore besoin de pas mal d'entraînement, mais ça m'a fait du bien de dessiner autre chose que mes persos bien statiques d'ordinaire.

Ouch! hey, did you use a How to draw manga: illustrating battle as a reference? it's amazing! ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yzabel In reply to Tranet [2010-03-24 06:45:14 +0000 UTC]

Yup, I used one of those, only I then inked the picture in reverse. It was interesting to do that, because I seldom draw such scenes, and it allowed me to understand a couple of things better. Now I have hopes that I won't have to use a reference for other scenes like this one.

Tranet In reply to Yzabel [2010-03-24 16:03:24 +0000 UTC]

there's no shame in using references. It's how artists improve themselves. All in all, you did a fantastic job! ^^

Yzabel In reply to Tranet [2010-03-24 19:51:36 +0000 UTC]

As long as we walk away from the same reference afterwards, yeah, I guess it's alright.

What a direct title xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yzabel In reply to Daandric [2010-03-24 06:46:29 +0000 UTC]

Pretty much. It's one of the "100 themes challenge" titles, a list on which I've been sitting since 2006; when I started doodling this scene, I realized that I might as well use it for the challenge, because I probably wouldn't do anything else with such a theme/title in the upcoming months.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Daandric In reply to Yzabel [2010-03-24 10:28:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I heard about that. It is good challenge but daaamn, I would lose my motivation fast because it would tons of drawing with the theme i don't want.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yzabel In reply to Daandric [2010-03-24 12:05:21 +0000 UTC]

That's precisely why it's taking me so much time. If I have no inspiration for a theme, I don't draw it; when I finally do, I draw. In the meantime, the list goes non-updated.

Good job with the dynamic pose! The lady lacks a little shading, though (only the light somehow doesn't suffice, I fear).

Hmmr, I think you're right. I wonder if I didn't have more/stronger shadows at some point, but something seems to have got lost in the process. I guess I'll have to correct that, but at a time when I'm less tired. *sigh*
