Description
I'm going to miss these holidays when I have time to just sit down and make something I think is pretty. D:I haven't touched traditional media for ages, but I have neither the space nor the money to indulge in acrylic or oil painting, soooooo....
Watercolour and pencil.
(I think the most annoying thing about this is that whenever I try to take a photo of it, some colour and detail is lost
Better look at her face: [link]
Pencil sketch because I think something always gets lost in translation:

Small edit: changed the deviation's name because I want to save it for something else

Such amazing work you've done here! It reminds me of something one might see if one of the main characaters were telling a flashback tale of Katara. Great use of colors, and the pose works very well for a water bender! Excellent work!

Well you know trying out new medium (at least on deviant art) and i think you did fairly well. Probably the only thing is so and so's remark about the lack of shading. Oh well!

Ooooooooh, I have three things to thank you for - the comment, the favourite, and the watch .
I'm happy with the water, but even though I said this in other comments, I'll say it again - it looks nicer in person . I'm not really one to blow my own trumpet, but in this case, I just can't help myself
. It looks a little too blue
.
Thanks again :]

no problem on the three big thanks, you rart is just that good,
but i can agree with you on the "too blue" aspects, water is transparent, which is why you see it as more pigment than nessisary, so ya.
welcome!

ha ha, so you've been making friends with Painter lately, eh?
i absolutely love the pose, very dynamic, and the water around her too!
somehow that reminds me a bit of Moses when he parted the red sea

Actually, that's REAL watercolour, folks ! Albeit a cheap $6 kid's set
. The water's actually more green than it looks here, but photos and scans seem to kill it - especially scans, which is why this is a photo
. I was just in the mood for something traditional-y
.

Once again the amazing z00t has shared another awesome piece of Avatar fanart with the gAangsters that stalk him.
There is no better medium for a beautiful waterbender than watercolors. I am sure of it now...

AH, there you go again with your trademark curly hair and eye for detail. This is very impressive, and this is coming from someone who's really into digital art.
Not forgetting to mention that watercolour is basically the best medium to portray something as watery as Katara. Those little splatters are a really nice touch :]

Hehe - thanks, Artrix :]. I really ought to do more colouring of ANY sort, but I just find it hard to get into the mood, sometimes :[.
This whole painting was really just an excuse to get to do the splattery thing, really .

I actually find traditional media quite therapeutic to work with, but it takes a lot of time and space, so it's not always possible .

water is so much easier than people, but this particular splash is about the hardest thing one can do with it, and you pulled it off. For the figure I'd recommend starting lighter, much lighter, and then go darker with shadows and such. Her face looks flat - her hair less so, but it could use more highlights too. Even dark skinned people have very light highlights.

She IS rather flat, but when I painted this, I planned it to look that way . I didn't think it'd look 'bad', but apparently, it does
.
I'm quite fond of the look of some of Rebecca Guay's paintings (see links below ), so I wanted to try and get a similar look, but I do need to throw in more depthzorz to get the full effect.

it doesn't look bad but it doesn't look great. if you check out lastscionz 's gallery, he did a great comic recently of Lilo and Stitch. In it, he shows pretty well that you can get away with making a comic's cheeks and forehead flat - even flattening the space between eyes, so long as the edges of the head are well rounded - and form a strong cone shape, tapering toward the chin. I think the only thing wrong with her head is the shadow of her jawline is too even. Bring that shadow up a tad as the line goes up to her ear, to emphasize the roundness there.

I actually didn't find the water all that troublesome to paint ...it's just really time-consuming
. Maybe once I get into tricky areas like distortion effects caused by water, then I'll be in trouble
. This was a pretty simple, straightforward very 'cartoony' style of colouring water
.
That said, thank you! And thanks for the fav!
