What do you know? Two characters with less than a perfect chance at returning for another bout are both coming back in Ultimate!

Let me explain. When I first picked up Smash 4, I was eager to try out Lucina, despite everyone else dismissing her as a clone character. For some reason, I didn't understand that she was a clone, and I'm glad I didn't, or I never would have picked her up. To this day, she is still one of my best - if not my absolute best - characters in the game.

I picked up Shulk early on as well, but eventually I retired him. I noticed that these two have similar themes going for them: themes about changing fate and changing the future: how it's not written and is ours to decide. I started shipping them as a result, and I was curious to see if other people shipped them as well. Sadly, this is a relatively minor ship in the grand scheme of Smash shippings.

As for why these characters had a less-than-perfect chance at returning? Well, Lucina is obviously a clone - er, excuse me...an echo fighter - so when deciding who wouldn't make the cut this time around, people preemptively picked her. As I mentioned before, I wasn't amused, since she's one of my best in 4, so seeing her come back was pretty cathartic. As for Shulk, well...he had a better chance at coming back than Lucina, but I was under the impression that Shulk wasn't the star of the Xenoblade franchise anymore, so cutting him out in favor of that new guy Rex would have been a logical move. Well, Rex is nowhere to be seen (yet), and Shulk is still around.

Take that, fate! The future is ours to decide!
