T H E D E V I L

Many cultures believe in a devil. He takes on many names, Satan, Lucifer, Iblis, Mara, Beelzebub, etc. No matter what your beliefs are, there is one thing you must understand as a fact.

There is a Devil.

He is not a horned man in a cape looming over all of your bad deeds. He is not even a man. In reality, he is many men, and she is many women. It is an endlessly changing, writhing mass in the heart of the sprawling pit of inexistence. Its body is compiled of the scum of existence. The worst of the living kind are stripped of identity after their death. They are reduced to skinless, fleshy shades forced to walk the planes of nothingness until they reach the gate. Their bodies walk themselves through the freezing fire of the wasteland. They have no conscious will to resist. But they are aware. Entering through the gate merges their soul with the maelstrom of flesh. They are not endlessly punished, or forced to deal with their wrongs. They are simply digested cyclically until the end of eternity. And they are aware. This is not hell, no word can express the calamity.
The Devil is not entirely conscious of its existence. But it does know its purpose: To devour what is delivered to it. It is not constrained to a religious sect or belief system. It has no care for what god you believe in, or what species you come from. But it knows who will be delivered, and it waits.

This took a ton of time and I am really happy with how it turned out. This was part one of my Illustration studio final. It was meant to be a tarot card piece that I kind of ran with and made my own interpretation.
