Description Here is an explosion tutorial as Leth requested, although I don't think I'm so good at explosions that I can teach how to draw them... But I can teach some of the principles behind them!

But the best thing to do is really to watch video of explosions. (Some links are supplied in the Flash)

Edit: I just learned that "flame" explosions are officially called BLEVEs (pronounced "blev-ee"), or Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosions. You can look up this term on youtube to see a bunch of them!

Additionally, a deviant named ~ProfessorDoom has commented about the collapsing of the mystery of gamma ray bursters (pun intended):
"The core of the hypernova collapses directly into a black hole and two extremely energetic jets of plasma are emitted from its rotational poles at nearly the speed of light. These jets emit intense gamma rays, and are a candidate explanation for gamma ray bursts. In recent years a great deal of observational data on gamma ray bursts significantly increased our understanding of these events, and made clear that the collapse model produces explosions that differ only in detail from more or less ordinary supernovae. Nevertheless, they continue to sometimes be referred to in the literature as hypernovae. The word hypernova itself was coined by S.E. Woosley. [link] " Check the link for more information!

Wow, if only I found this about a year ago, then I might have understood my science class a little better! xp

I watched this... then I realized that I never draw anything... but explosions are still cool to watch, and I feel that much more informed.

Brilliant tutorial
It was so interesting and entertaining; I had lots of fun going through it, and I wasn't even planning on drawing explosions xD Well, I'll definitely know where to look if I need to.
And I loved the chemistry bits in there :3 Thanks for this! ^^

Ah, chemistry~
This could come in handy during ap chem actually.

you did a wonderful job, this whole thing just made me glee, seeing as how i love anything related to chemistry (or science in general). I also love how you related science and art in such a simplistic, yet complicated, way.

Ooooh, this ought to help me whenever I'm in the mood to draw something blowing up for no apparent reason! I like to blow things up - in pictures, I mean - and maybe I could draw an explosion that I'll want to put up on DA someday?

"What is Explodin'?"

Brilliant Tutorial! I think the part with all the different things affected by the explosion was my favourite, but I also found the science parts really well explained.
A science lesson on drawing that doesn't make my head hurt?
It's inspired!

Congratulations on the DD! It's well deserved

A lot of people are complaining about a science lesson but I think its great you did that because in order to draw something you must know all about it.

Roskyspoofers In reply to iamhere-V [2007-10-01 15:46:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but art and science are kind of interdependent if you think about it. Art often defines the goals of science, and by the discoveries science makes, we (the artists), learn more about the internal workings of our subjects, and therefore, how to depict our subjects more accurately, specifically when unseen internal workings are affecting the physical aspects that can be seen. Anatomy is a good example of this, knowing the muscle groups helps a lot when drawing living subjets. And in the same way, knowing the reaction behind an explosion will help you understand how to draw the explosion.

haha. very nice tutorial!

And nuclear bombs have such large explosions because they literally destroy matter and transform it into energy. It's where Einstein's famous equation (E=mc^2) comes in.

You just take the amount of mass you're destroying, and multiply it by the speed of light squared.

Turns out that the energy created from destroying a soda can could power the entire USA fo 9 hours.
