Description
This is in response to my poll asking what tutorial I should make! This is just the general idea on my style of shading. Please note that this is not the only way you can shade. There's tons of different styles for shading. There's no right or wrong <:Hope this is helpful, and if you have any questions, I'll try my best to answer them <3
If you draw something with the help of this tutorial, please tag me in it! I would love to see what you guys come up with

Oooh thanks for making this!Β It's a beautiful way to see one of your dragons come to life~
Plus I still have trouble with shading, so I really appreciate this ;w;
So for the colors, how do you pick the shadow & highlight colors?Β It looks to me like the main highlight is more of a yellow, and the shadows more of an olive on a leaf-green base.Β Is that about right?
And the final highlight, is it a white color?
Thanks again zagiir, you have a lovely shading technique and I'm grateful you shared this with us. <3

Oh no problem at all! Thats exactly why I made this <3
When I pick my shades and light, I first do the background and see what I need If its a redish background, then everything's going to be a little bit on the red side due to that red light bouncing around off of the subject. Same for every other color. For this one I was picturing a sunny day in a green field, with only the sun as the main light source. Normally the shadows consist the colors of the surrounding environment. So I had a very grey, blueish green for the shadow, and set the shading layer on Multiply. Multiply on Photoshop basically does a lot of the work for you. I made sure to work without all these shortcuts in the beginning so I know what the multiply is actually doing
For the highlight, I had a yellow, near the white side, and I set that on Overlay. Overlay basically just shades over all the other layers, but makes them brighter. So you're not losing any of your work below. You can really see it at work on the 5th step in this tutorial. See the cheek, how its yellow, then towards the shadow it turns a brighter green?Β
Then the white light in the end is just for environment "bleeding" I guess you would say. Since I'm picturing white clouds in the sky, and when you look at the sun itself, it is white, I just put that there to give it an extra shine to it Whites like that you would want to use very sparingly. Along with pure black.
You can always look up "Color theory" on google to help you out some more!Β
Sorry I'm not the greatest at explaining my work, but I try my best! A lot of this is becoming second nature for me so most of this I just wanted to say "I do this because....I just do" xDΒ
Hope this helps anyways! <3

Thanks so much for writing all this out & explaining so clearly! I've read it several times since you replied, and I think it's sinking in.Β
Imho you've explained it much more clearly than any of the color theory articles I've read.Β
It makes a lot of sense to visualize the background first, I don't tend to do that as I usually decide to add a background after finishing the main figure. *facepalm* It seems like a little bit of thought goes a long way to smooth out the process first, eh?Β I'll try doing that next time~
Thanks again, it's helpful!Β I really appreciate it.
