Maybe implied another, but I like the idea that they are in these tubes by their will.
Something like: elves were long-lived folk, but when they have reached a high level of technology, the Supreme Council adopted decision about a voluntary robotization. Middle elf girl was one of those who chose be robotized immediately. While there was a transformation of her legs, she kept quiet smile in anticipation of life after the process is complete.
