Simulants

Part 9

The Administrator spawned in the drop off plane. He was using an avatar of a badger. He had just manually released all the KIA agents from their containment rooms. Any Simulants who game overed would end up in these prison rooms. They just needed to take out the hacker and they’d have them trapped. Without override commands, the Administrator would have to organize a hunting party the old fashion way. The plan was to drop, get as well supplied as possible, then rendezvous at the last known position of the intruder. With luck, they could track the creature. The reports said it was wounded and evasive. So it was probable that it was still hiding in the building. The airplane door opened up inviting the rush of wind and the light of the setting sun. With a deep breath, the Administrator took the plunge.

Orso only took a fraction of a second to determine his best course of action. RUN! He pivoted on his feet and took off in the opposite direction of the buff zombie. He could hear it’s pounding feet chasing after him. Apparently the monster was very fast. Glancing behind him Orso timed a side jump into an adjacent room right as the zombie was about to nab him. The creature’s massive momentum carried it past the door and crashed down the hall as it tried to stop.

Orso found himself in another very bland office with cubicles and a window view letting in the flashes of lightning. Orso quickly disappeared into the maze of thin partitions and waited. Soon enough, the monster was at the doorway, it’s red eyes darting back and forth scanning the room. Orso searched quietly and found a paper weight on one of the desks. He watched as the monster searched, and while it was not looking in his direction, he tossed the item to the other side of the room. The monster lunged at the sudden noise, plowing over several cubicles, lashing out randomly. Orso moved as quickly as he could through the exit door and back into the hall.

“I think it’s about time to get out of here, this trip has not been worth it.” Orso whispered to himself. Going out through the lobby didn’t seem like the best idea. There might be another way. Convenient zip lines, window washing units, or maybe even a crane…

Orso stopped as he peered through a door to yet another office, and was happy to find a convenient crane. He entered and looked at it. It was only a couple of stories below him and led straight to a neighboring building.

As Orso pondered on a way to get through the window in a stealthy way, the backpack dragon suddenly made a loud squeak.

“Quiet.” Orso said as he turned his head to give the trash dragon a stern look. But then he saw the zombie quietly walking towards him.

“Since when do zombies move quietly?” Orso drew his knife and moved to stab the zombie through the throat.

The monster, seeing it was spotted, stopped and let out an ear piercing scream. This caused Orso to only hesitate in surprise for a moment before he plunged his large blade through the zombie’s throat and into the base of the spine.

The cry was cut short, but Orso knew the damage was done. He drew his pistol and put several holes in the window. He then picked up a desk and threw it through the window. He turned in time to see another zombie stumble into the room. He found some hand holds and lowered himself as far as he could before dropping onto the crane.

Orso landed on his hands and feet. The top of the crane arm was meshed to make a stable platform for walking and about a meter across. He got to his feet and started to move as quickly as he dared across the crane. He was about half way when he heard a crash behind him and the crane arm shook. He turned to see a zombie had landed on the crane and was struggling to its feet. Orso drew his knife again. He didn’t want to waste any more precious bullets. He waited for the zombie to get close, then he lunged.

Unfortunately for Orso, that was the same moment the muscular boss zombie arrived. It slammed into the crane arm from above with excessive force. The whole crane armed lurched and swayed. Orso and the charging zombie were both thrown off balance. The zombie tumbled off the side and fell, disappearing into the fog below. Orso started to fall off the side and dropped the knife, he was able to catch the ledge, but slipped and only caught onto the lower structure of the crane arm at the last moment. The knife disappeared with the zombie below.

Orso hung there, feet dangling in space. He was adjusting his hand for a better grip, when the trash dragon suddenly crawled out of the backpack and moved on top of Orso’s head before jumping onto the structure of the crane arm.

“Oh, now you can walk by yourself!” Orso yelled. He was about to pull himself up when he found that the oversized zombie was now right above him, leaning down to stare Orso in the face. It looked like it was supposed to be a cat with yellowish fur. It was scarred and angry looking.

Is it better to be eaten or fall to your death? Orso thought. Unbeknownst to him, the so-called trash dragon was at a control box and had pried it open and reconnected some wires. As the monster reached towards poor Orso, suddenly the whole crane lurched as the motors activated and moved at a startling speed. The buff zombie lost its balance as it was leaning towards Orso and flipped right over him. It reached out widely and grabbed Orso’s left leg, claws digging a deep gash, but it’s weight was too great and it failed to slow it’s fall. It disappeared into the mist with a roar.

Orso winced in pain as he pulled himself on top of the crane and then laid there catching his breath. He found the trash dragon looking down at him. “Oh, you decided to come back. You wouldn’t have anything to do with moving the crane would you?” Orso questioned.

The little dragon stared silently at him, but Orso could have sworn it was smiling.
