I was challenged again by and to do the 1 hour challenge for a map. This time we did the "Congo/Middle Africa" Region. So I decided on a scenario where Liberia is established farther south and fully endorsed by the USA. I had originally planned for 2 ethnic maps along with the main map but the topography took so long I barely had any time to even finish the legend. James Monroe was the fifth US president from 1817-25 and was a slave holder.
The Republic of Liberia was founded by the in main part under the activities of the American Colonization Society (ACS), of which Monroe was a member, who believed black people in the United States would face better chances for freedom and prosperity in Africa in 1822 not following the American Civil War of 1861-65. Less than 20,000 freed and free born people now referred to as African-American emigrated to that country between that time and the civil war when all slaves in the US were freed and the practice simply died out during Reconstruction when such persons saw a great expansion in rights and opportunity that ended within a few decades as white supremacy regained power.
Still in all I cannot but admire your cartography skills and this is a fine map.

It is a good map and a fine idea other than the small error in the corner text but then who other than a history freak like me would notice. Β
