A gang leader and small-time criminal, Brock Rumlow had far greater ambitions. Enlisting in Taskmaster's training academy, Brock honed his fighting skills and marksmanship. When he left the school he began a career as a mercenary, proving himself bloodthirsty and talented enough to draw the attention of the Red Skull, who enlisted Brock into his ranks and gave him the Crossbones identity. Crossbones would quickly rise in status and become the Skull's most feared soldier and most trusted operative. He would be responsible for breaking the brainwashing of Synthia Schmidt, the Skull's daughter, and the two would quickly form a close partnership. After the Red Skull's apparent death Synthia decided to become the new Red Skull, and Crossbones would continue to support her as no one understood and shared his love of carnage and death as she did.
