Daughter of General 'Thunderbolt' Ross, Betty Ross began to fall in love with Bruce Banner when the two worked together on her father's gamma bomb project. When an accident led to Bruce becoming the Hulk however, Betty's world was shaken. She and Bruce continued to try and pursue a relationship, and during a time when Bruce's condition was under control they even married. Things would end tragically for the couple as the Hulk's old foe the Abomination would poison Betty, framing the Hulk for the murder in the process.

Betty's father had secretly recovered her body however, and stored her in cryogenic suspension until she could be saved. When he began to work with the Intelligencia and became the Red Hulk, his new allies suspected he would betray them. They chose to revive Betty, transforming her into a Red She-Hulk and brainwashing her to hunt down the Red Hulk. Eventually she was freed from her conditioning when her father and the Hulk took down the Intelligencia. Since then she and Bruce have begun the difficult process of rebuilding their relationship.
