Description
When Conrad Josten's older brother Erik left home to become a criminal, eventually recieving superpowers and taking on a series of villainous identities, Conrad was left heartbroken and resentful of his brother. When Eric eventually became the superhero Atlas however and saved the world alongside the Thunderbolts, Conrad began to forgive him.

When the Thunderbolts were believed dead having been warped to Counter-Earth, Conrad was enlisted by the government as part of their Redeemer program, with him serving in return for a post-humous pardon for his brother's former crimes. Conrad was equipped with a suit that allowed him to manipulate the energies of the Darkforce dimension and became the Smuggler, an alias once briefly used by his brother.

When Erik and the Thunderbolts returned from Counter-Earth Erik was shocked to learn that his brother Conrad and the rest of the Redeemers had been killed in action by Graviton, a long-time foe of the Thunderbolts. It was eventually revealed that Conrad had survived the attack however, having used his suit to escape into the Darkforce dimension itself where he had been trapped. With Baron Zemo's help, Erik was able to bring his brother back to Earth and the two reconciled before Conrad joined the Thunderbolts to fight alongside his brother.
