Description
A magician in the court of Ramesses II, Anath-Na Mut was exiled into the desert after failing to defeat the prophet Moses. It was deep in the desert that he stumbled upon an ancient temple containing the mystical Ka Stone. Taking the stone for himself, Anath is imbued with great power and immortality. He takes on the identity of the Sphinx and wanders the Earth for centuries, meddling in history as he chooses. Bored of his eternal life, he would begin to search for ways to end his life. Attacking the Inhumans to acquire their libraries of knowledge and then the Nova centurion Richard Ryder to gain access to the Xandarian Worldmind, the Sphinx eventually abandons his quest for death and instead chooses to destroy the Earth. He is opposed by the Fantastic Four, but when they realise his power is too great to be stopped they bargain with the cosmic entity Galactus to defeat their enemy. Galactus battled the Sphinx to a standstill before crushing the Ka Stone and casting him back in time. Now powerless, the Sphinx would track down his past self and began working together in order to escape the time loop they were trapped in. Rebuilding the destroyed Ka Stone and claiming the Ka Stone from that timeline, the pair returned to the present only for the younger Sphinx to betray his future self and steal both stones in order to become all-powerful. Nova and the Fantastic Four were able to defeat him before he could adapt to his new powers however, and he was last seen exploding as his powers consumed him.
