When I was teething, my mom let me nibble on her finger once - then she pulled back her finger and pretended to be in a lot of pain. Apparently my baby-self looked ready to cry, and that was how she taught me not to bite people.

They were born as infants but spent some time growing in laboratory tubes before Gaster really began studying/testing them. IIRC they grow at an accelerated rate, but they still spent *some* time as babies.
(In this particular variant of Mercyplates, the tubes broke down before they'd grown out of the "infant phase", so to speak.)
