As I said in the last one I hated to break this scene in half since it’s meant to be a self-contained scene. But I didn’t really have a lot of options, you see how long it got!
Been a while since we’ve seen someone get their arm broken or thrown violently into a wall . What goes around comes aroooound (in the face!)
Papyrus is glowing his eyes for Gaster - it’s his normal orange-y with a bit of purple. Usually purple is fear, but in different contexts it can also be a call to be brave.
Speaking in caps makes it hard to discern between love and LOVE, huh.
You thought Papyrus having googly eye blasters was a joke BUT NOW I'M COMMITTED
What was Gaster doing exactly that made this happen? Basically, he made a list of IDF weakpoints using the information he got from the brothers' TML files , then he set up something like a magic sonar to try and see through a weakpoint to the other side without opening it. He used the brothers as a power source/guide for it, possibly using principles from this - you can see them holding hands (which increases their magic output ) over a specialized hand-reader in the last one like the ones around the lab . He definitely did not think something like this would happen.
As for the strange tar creature itself, here are some things to consider:
-Gaster mentioned in his initial warnings about IDF that weakpoints could lead to other points in time as well as space or other dimensions.
-It knows who he is, how he made the brothers, what will happen to him, where he’s going, and the effect that will eventually have on the timeline, even though at this point in time, Gaster has no idea who it is.
-The only ones in the game that remember Gaster after he’s erased are his followers, all of whom do not exist until a certain value (Fun) is changed that brings them into existence. When that value is changed again, they disappear. They all talk about him in the third person, although that doesn’t preclude them possibly being pieces of his consciousness, since they say he was shattered. Anything related to Gaster himself after he’s erased (his theme song, his journal entry, the two sprites that might be him) also require changing values to exist.
-Sometimes in games, when you try to create something from a data value that doesn’t or shouldn’t normally exist or has been altered in some way, the game will try to create something out of things that do exist, resulting in strange, glitchy mishmashes of random sprites and tiles. Pokemon Red/Blue is a good example of this (our good friend MissingNo), as are the Metroid II secret worlds .
-An outsider unrestricted by the normal laws of life and death and time that toys with the weak out of boredom or curiousity... you could call it an anomaly.

A little detail that I noticed while rereading: On panel 15, where Gaster's pushing Papyrus down out of the way of the goop-monster's attack, you can clearly see the stitches in is coat.
The stitches he had to make after Papyrus saved his life.
It's the little things that make me love this comic. Or... love it *more*, I guess.

You know, I think someone actually brought up the points about your Handplates story before. You SORT of addressed one of the big issues here...well, at least somewhat...with the whole "the future won't remember you" thing. But I'm not sure that's truly solving a plot hole so much as just pointing OUT your story has a plot hole. Because it is KIND of a big flaw that basically everything Gaster here will do...is going to end up being utterly useless in every single timeline, be it neutral, genocide run or pacifist. And that sort of, in a way, breaks the tension of the story. We KNOW they're not gonna die. We KNOW they're not really going to be that badly hurt if they still pop up for Frisk, and because of that, you're sort of...well...crippled in what you can show. Because we know they survive, the pain they endure sort of becomes less real. And it also becomes insulting, because the pain they DO suffer from is not only basically without real impact and consequences, its without benefits at all. They suffer for nothing because they never break the barrier, their abilities don't stop a psychopathic Frisk at their worst, so then...what IS the point of what Gaster does to them, if it doesn't ultimately help the barrier come down, doesn't end up actually saving monsters in the end from either Frisk or Flowey or the like, and they don't even really "learn" from their pain because they don't remember Gaster?
Why I Dislike the Undertale Handplates AUPut away your torches and pitchforks and please hear me out. Hear me out, THEN you can say whatever you’d like about my opinion.
There's a lot I like about :iconzarla:'s comic series.
...but there's a few VERY big issues I have with it.
1. It’s emotionally draining and too much torture.
I don’t have much tolerance for stories like 1984 and Grave of the Fireflies. I find them too draining and unpleasant. The characters don’t act like people, but stereotypes/archtypes in the case of Grave of the Fireflies, or are just assholes I cannot relate to like…well…EVERYONE but Julia in 1984. She’s the only likable, relatable one and she really gets the shaft.
And Handplates is much like that. Reading it is overly draining and I can clearly tell it’s meant to hit me in the feels. And the continued horrible behavior of Gaster? It relates to why I stopped feeling sorry for Joel from the Last

Well, it's easy from the point of view of a reader to know that all this work won't result in the barrier being broken. But Gaster doesn't know that, so from his perspective, it's not pointless. So he's going to keep trying.
But I get what you mean, that knowing the end result does remove the tension of a given scene, but that applies to any story where you already know the ending. When I play Undertale, I KNOW Undyne isn't going to kill me when she traps me on the bridge, so there's no tension during that scene at all. That's just a trade-off you have to make when you're setting a story before another one.
Just because they don't remember Gaster doesn't mean what he did to them won't have consequences in the future, and the way history rewrites itself also shapes who they become and how they get there. The events in the lab shaped their personalities and belief systems, and all that still persists, even after Gaster is gone. That void actually has a significant impact on their lives. But these are all things that haven't happened yet, haha.

.
zarla gaster is remembered. He is everywhere in time and space ratther than being in the void. He doesn't have any influence but he sees and listens. His creations are still available. Asgore remembers him for example if you check the link and read the post. This comics might be a great AU but if we talk about canon game, he is neither forgotten nor in void.

That post states right at the beginning that it's almost impossible to make 100% authoritative statements about Gaster BECAUSE what we get in the game about him is so vague! I'm already aware of everything that post talks about, so you're not really telling me anything new. For the purposes of this particular story, I'm filling in gaps and stringing what bits of information we do get about him together in a way that makes sense to me/works for this story. If people have other theories, that's fine, but they aren't what Handplates is using.

Undertale was deliberately made to have some missing information for artist and writers of the fandom to use there skills to create filling information. Such as AUs and ATs. Maybe Toby took an page for Scott and deliberately planned Undertale out to make the fans come up with their own stories. hmmm.

I love how you conveyed SO much with those two simple words, "Not again". Just with that, we know not only that is Gaster remembering his dead family, but also that in this dazed moment of honesty, he considers Papyrus to be part of his family.
And I also loved Sans' "Really, dude? REALLY?" expression when Gaster said he'd put too much work into the project to lose them. Nice tr, Mr. Transparent.
Given that Sans could read the keyboard, I take it either Gaster taught him to read common, or he taught himself (maybe using food labels, as I saw one fan theorize)?
One thing I've been wondering about is why this version of Papyrus is so intensely set against hurting people, whereas his older self is fine with beating PaciFrisk within an inch of their life. Is it because Handplates!Papyrus is more acquainted with pain, and has a better understanding of what he's putting people through when he attacks them, compared to a version of him who doesn't remember being tortured?

Technically, I bet he considers both Sans and Papyrus to be family. I don't like how this page makes Gaster seem like "papyrus NOO. what? oh, no fuck sans", even though it's clear he was trying his hardest to protect Sans as well.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
StephOBrien In reply to RepulsiveArtwork [2017-07-23 07:22:41 +0000 UTC]
I think Gaster seemed to be more worried about Papyrus because Papyrus was the one the goopmonster was attacking. If it had gone after Sans, he probably would have been similarly alarmed. You may notice that, when Gaster was thrown against the wall, the bones protecting Sans faltered for a moment, but Gaster restored them before he even hit the ground. This was clearly a priority for him.
