As I said in the last one I hated to break this scene in half since it’s meant to be a self-contained scene. But I didn’t really have a lot of options, you see how long it got!
Been a while since we’ve seen someone get their arm broken or thrown violently into a wall . What goes around comes aroooound (in the face!)
Papyrus is glowing his eyes for Gaster - it’s his normal orange-y with a bit of purple. Usually purple is fear, but in different contexts it can also be a call to be brave.
Speaking in caps makes it hard to discern between love and LOVE, huh.
You thought Papyrus having googly eye blasters was a joke BUT NOW I'M COMMITTED
What was Gaster doing exactly that made this happen? Basically, he made a list of IDF weakpoints using the information he got from the brothers' TML files , then he set up something like a magic sonar to try and see through a weakpoint to the other side without opening it. He used the brothers as a power source/guide for it, possibly using principles from this - you can see them holding hands (which increases their magic output ) over a specialized hand-reader in the last one like the ones around the lab . He definitely did not think something like this would happen.
As for the strange tar creature itself, here are some things to consider:
-Gaster mentioned in his initial warnings about IDF that weakpoints could lead to other points in time as well as space or other dimensions.
-It knows who he is, how he made the brothers, what will happen to him, where he’s going, and the effect that will eventually have on the timeline, even though at this point in time, Gaster has no idea who it is.
-The only ones in the game that remember Gaster after he’s erased are his followers, all of whom do not exist until a certain value (Fun) is changed that brings them into existence. When that value is changed again, they disappear. They all talk about him in the third person, although that doesn’t preclude them possibly being pieces of his consciousness, since they say he was shattered. Anything related to Gaster himself after he’s erased (his theme song, his journal entry, the two sprites that might be him) also require changing values to exist.
-Sometimes in games, when you try to create something from a data value that doesn’t or shouldn’t normally exist or has been altered in some way, the game will try to create something out of things that do exist, resulting in strange, glitchy mishmashes of random sprites and tiles. Pokemon Red/Blue is a good example of this (our good friend MissingNo), as are the Metroid II secret worlds .
-An outsider unrestricted by the normal laws of life and death and time that toys with the weak out of boredom or curiousity... you could call it an anomaly.

I just gotta say how much I love your callbacks. Watching Gaster get his arm snapped and being thrown across the room (same arm too! nice touch) was immensely gratifying. Watching him get right back up and defend Papyrus? Amazing. I'm starting to worry that you're going to make me actually care for him by the time he falls.
I love your actions scenes. Panel 15, where he faces the oncoming attack, was so cool. I feel like Panels 18/19 were cut off, as we're only seeing a little bit of it. I really liked Panel 34, where the Thing was almost touching his chin. But in general, I really liked the attention to detail with Gaster shaking and the sounds he made. Sans and Papyrus are adorable, rushing to each other in 38. I would have really liked to see Gaster's expression in 39, which I imagine to be pain wracked horror.
But most of all I love 46, kind of the aftermath. He tries to brush off saving them (and all of the associated pain). Papyrus looks so happy and innocently gratified. Sans gives him the 'you're so full of crap right now' look, and it's perfect. Oh really, Gaster? The only person you're fooling is yourself.
That being said, you mentioned that Gaster's been low health for a while. How did he just take a pounding like that? How is he gong to heal? Either this is going to be the first nail in the coffin, or Asgore is gong to be involved, I imagine. I can only wonder at how the boys will take this development.
Thank you so much for such a satisfying beat down. ^-^

Yeah I was also wondering about his current HP/how he's going to deal with these injuries. There's no way he's going to let anyone heal him, but going by the angle his arm was snapped at it's probably hanging on by just one bone. No way he's hiding THAT from Asgore, or anyone. I also adore that panel where Papyrus looks happy about being right, and Sans is just like "dude you lie about as well as my bro."
I feel a bit more pity for Gaster than you though, I think. I feel like he's totally done this all to himself, but I'm not happy or satisfied he got hurt. I AM happy and satisfied he went full papa-bear for just a moment. I guess I like him in the same way I like the Phantom of the Opera, or other "villains with a sad past." With the Phantom, I know he's too messed up and crossed way too many lines to be a healthy match for Christine. BUT I still like his passion for music and art, and I like what they could have been if he were less controlling and didn't kill people he didn't like (and if she weren't projecting her grief for her father onto him, raising him to a sort of deity in her mind).
Similarly Gaster's done wrong and he definitely deserves what's coming, but I still like the non-bad parts of him, and sincerely wish he could have made different choices or faced different circumstances. I also like him because he really doesn't WANT to be like this, and KNOWS what he's doing is horrible. He has been fighting with his feelings from the very beginning, he just feels he has no other option.
Not that I think you're wrong or want to change your mind, I just think it's neat how we both feel such strong yet very DIFFERENT emotions for the same fictional character :3

The beautiful thing about Zarla's Gaster is that he is such a conflicting one. He has honorable characteristics and flaws, and all of those little personality traits that make him a very relatable and human (for the given value) to us. I actually do like his character a lot. It's well made and compelling.
As a person though, it's a lot more difficult. I hate him with a passion for what he's done, even if it was well thought out and not out of true malice. He doesn't like who he is or what he has done, but he continues to do it out of the hope that something good might come of it, to save the last person he truly cares about. He feels he is beyond redemption, and I think a lot of us feel a little bit of that, in the dark nights of the soul. Yet, at the same time, I admire parts of him. I admire his push to protect his boys, and to teach them and care about them after a fashion ('when's the last time they ate?') despite trying not to have feelings about them. I am happy that he went so far to protect them. I just wish he had a few different perspectives.
Given what he has done to the boys, I did enjoy the karmic abuse he received. An eye for an eye, after all. When the trauma he inflicted was new and fresh in my mind, I was howling for blood and suffering. The feeling has dulled somewhat with time (helped by a few comics where he's not maiming them), but it still felt really good to see him getting what he gave. And it was in defense of the creatures he did it to, so there's a nice twist of irony.
He has good qualities, and bad ones, and that's what makes him such a great character. In his tragedy, he does bad things in order to do good ones. The entire Tragedy of W.D. Gaster is well orchestrated, and given different circumstances I think that he could have done good things. He has the capability, no matter what he tells Papyrus. I do like him quite a bit (similar to how you feel), but that was oh so satisfying.
'You lie as well as my bro' XD Nicely put.

It was actually the bit of healing that he got from Asgore that saved him! Without what he got from that, he probably would've died, haha. He interrupted Asgore so he didn't get healed all the way, but it was enough to keep him up this time... that and his own determination, in a sense.

Hmm. The only option coming up for Blobfriend's identity is blobGaster, but I feel like it isn't quite so simple.
(I mean, my constant Orz jokes aside I doubt They would have any interest in Gaster, and his work would hold no importance to Them, so They're right out...)

Are you sure Sans doesn't remember Gaster as well? I mean, with how mysterious he is, his scientific background and interest, his shortcuts, and most importantly... "you'll never see 'em again" and "look. i gave up trying to go back a long time ago." See who again? Go back where? The shopkeeper in Snowdin says the bros just showed up one day. I think, based on the evidence, when Gaster was shattered across time and space, Sans and Papyrus must have been affected too in some way. There's also no evidence that Gaster was "erased" from anyone's memory. I mean, like, the Gaster Followers don't say he was erased and no one remembers him. They just say that an experiment went wrong, his life was cut short, and he was shattered across time and space. And after a long time, Asgore hired a new royal scientist, Alphys, who had just created Mettaton('s body for Napstablook's cousin) as a 'Human Eradication Robot' with a SOUL. (So the idea that Alphys worked with Gaster also isn't canon at all in the slightest.)

"Not..."
"Not again..."
I don't know if I'm interpreting it wrong, but it seems that in that moment of desperation Gaster doesn't want to feel powerless as he watches another of his species/family die again.
Not again... THIS time, he will protect them. He has the power to.
Of course he wouldn't admit it now that it's over, though. Not even to himself.

Jeez though, how's he going to explain this to Asgore and Alphys? I seriously doubt they're going to buy the 'accident' excuse for a third time. Maybe he could ask a certain test subject to heal him?

But would Papyrus succeed? I mean, he tried once, but we saw how that happened. Gaster would have to be willing to expose himself emotionally far more than he would like.

BluestStars In reply to gmstone1998 [2017-06-01 03:09:28 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, good point. He's kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place, though-- he could either ask Papyrus to heal him, and expose himself to the brothers more than he ever has, or let Asgore and Alphys see him injured again, probably resulting in them asking far too many questions that he couldn't possibly answer.
Or he could just hide in the lab until he's healed, but that would probably raise some questions too. Man, in situations like these it's almost funny how much Gaster has dug his own grave.

Oh man, Papyrus and Sans' faces when Gaster tried to cover up why he protected them is *amazing*. They aren't buying it *at all*.
I know it probably wouldn't happen but I headcanoned a little scene shortly afterward where Gaster begrudgingly praises them, Sans for figuring out how the machine works in a short amount of time and Papyrus for actually getting a hit in, and Papyrus is just over the moon about it while Sans doesn't even anything anymore.
