Description
Someone was asking about heights in handplates , so I decided to do some quick height comparisons. Based on their actual sprite heights!-Sans and the kid are about the same height, give or take a pixel.
-Counting her headspikes, Alphys is taller than Sans.
-Muffet is taller than all three of them. Muffet and Napstablook are the same height, actually.
-Papyrus is about a head taller than Sans. Which means he's only one head taller than the kid!
-Undyne is five pixels taller than Papyrus.
-Mettaton EX is three pixels taller than Undyne, and Mettaton EX is about the same height as Toriel if you don't count his hair poof. Papyrus would come up to Toriel's eyes.
-Asgore is five pixels taller than Toriel. So Papyrus would come up to about his nose!
Anyway I tend to resort to heads for height differences, so I roughly make Gaster a head taller than Papyrus, who's a head taller than Sans, but that'd make Gaster taller than Asgore which is too much. At the most, he'd be as tall as Toriel probably. But maybe the skelebros were shorter while they were in the lab, haha.

Sans and Frisk have a single pixel between them in height when facing sideways and two pixels when facing forward. Either Frisk gets taller or Sans gets shorter when facing front, I'm not sure. Considering Frisk has HAIR and that adds like half a centimeter to the top of most heads... Oh wait, and skin... Why am I trying to justify making Frisk even tinier compared to Sans I don't even what...
I actually took screenies of the sprites once and blew them up to observe.
While Pappy is nearly twice Sans's height, Sans's head comes up to his shoulder, suggesting not that Sans is a midget but that the game's art style is REALLY FREAKING CHIBI AS HELL
Toriel isn't as big as Asgore but still taller than Pappy, that I knew...

The canon sprites aren't really accurate, if you look a bit closer. In both, battle and overworld sprites, Undyne and Mettaton EX are magically taller than Toriel and Asgore.

Huh. That's a good point, I suppose. It's really hard to tell because you never see them close together enough to be able to tell.
That having been said, the game's art style is fairly chibi much of the time, so proportions are hard to guess at in any case.
In the case of Frisk's size, their deductive reasoning, competent independence, and hand-eye coordination indicates they cannot be younger than eight, at the youngest, and their gender ambiguity suggests that they can't be older than fourteen. The reasonable mien that makes the most sense is that Frisk is between ten and twelve, meaning they're definitely not as tiny as they're often depicted in artwork. I'm 5'1", and I know plenty of fifth graders who are taller than myself.
I love how Zarla does them. Most people who "try" to keep Frisk gender neutral wind up making them look either heavily feminine or more masculine while claiming not to. And while I honestly don't CARE what gender an artist or writer makes Frisk, their height being on par with Sans, who is simply short, makes perfect sense for the age group they most likely belong to, and Zarla does a wonderful job keeping them ambiguous. Unlike, say, TC-96, whose "Frisk" has always looked like a more masculine child, and gets steadily more so as their comic has progressed. Come to think of it, Endertale doesn't have ANY named female child characters at all whatsoever, but a sizable cast of little boys, including some OCs. Hmmm.

I have always ignored the UT fandom and their fan-made bullshit but yeah, zarla's depiction of Frisk is really well-done.

NokotaSilver In reply to Mystery-ded [2018-06-03 21:44:57 +0000 UTC]
Well, I mean, I don't mind it when Frisk is given a gender. They're not meant to be 100% genderless, after all, just like they're not supposed to be raceless or ageless. They're you-fill-in-the-blank. And to that extent, it's totally fine when people make their own choice with regard to what Frisk should be. I personally have a preference for older, female Frisk. Because I viewed the character that way myself. The only bullshit the UT community is guilty of is when they try to force other people to believe that their version of Frisk is the only correct interpretation.
I'm in my 30s and routinely get mistaken for a teenager, and this has been an issue all my life, being confused with a middle-schooler in my 20s despite being rather busty. Since that's how I always viewed Frisk, based on my own experiences, it's what I prefer. I found Toriel incredibly annoying because she reminds me of my aunt, who keeps thinking I'm her grandchild even though I'm in the same age bracket as her children, and talking to me like I'm a little girl. <.< But I'm OK with male Frisk too. Everyone has their own "Frisk." Though I do find stories with a male Frisk getting romantic with anybody somewhat hard to relate to. But that's my problem, not the writer's.
While some things make far more logical sense than others, like I explained in my previous statement, there is no 100% correct version of Frisk. As long as Frisk is filled with determination, they're right. Granted, I've seen writers come out with versions of Frisk that are the opposite of "determined" in every way, shape, or form, and don't seem to know what the word means enough to make the character have that trait in their personality. <.< So yeah, I suppose there is a such thing as a really bad Frisk.
One of my favorite fanfictions, "I killed you, can I have a kiss now?" has both Chara and Frisk depicted as opposite versions of transgender, yet they both use genderless pronouns. It's a right headache to read, but the story is worth the frustration. Frisk, Chara, Napstablook, and Monster Kid not having assigned genders makes them ripe toys to play with for anybody who wants to explore gender identity ideas within writing, though strangely the latter pair are rarely utilized in that way.
What irritates me is when people pretend to keep them neutral but make them appear and/or behave distinctly masculine or feminine. I have to assume the writers in question aren't aware of it much of the time, and think that they're staying neutral, yet that's based on their own lack of knowledge about their biases based on their own personal gender. We're only human, after all. Glitchtale Frisk has always sort of felt like a girl in a lot of ways, though not nearly as much as some attempts at genderless Frisk, and Endertale has always seemed like one enormous boys' club. (Plus lesbians. And Toriel, I suppose. Though Toriel barely HAS a personality in that comic beyond a broad concept of "mom person".) Meanwhile, in Zeragii's "Deeper Down" comic, Frisk is just straight up female in spite of barely appearing or behaving with any distinctive gender norms, because Zera herself sees Frisk as an eight year old girl and finds gender-neutral pronouns as irritating as I do.

so, found a slight issue with attempting to figure out heights in undertale. the only time you ever see monsters near adult humans (who's heights you can average, since the average human height is 5'5'') is in the intro, where a monster that is clearly asgore or related to him (it's him, boss monsters live forever and asgore named every location in the underground, hence he was the first bergentruckung) is standing at the head of an army, about to face off against the human army opposite. asgore and the human leader a close enough to average heights.
asgore is twice the dude's height. which means, according to these pixel measurements, frisk is over 5 foot in height.
somehow, i don't think that's accurate.

What if the leader was a teen or something? The people in the "crowd" of the backstory panel come to around to the base of Asgore's shoulderplate. So how tall would they be then?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
hellspawnz In reply to PunzieCorona [2017-03-08 02:13:30 +0000 UTC]
by the time you're in your mid teens, you're adult height. maybe a short adult depending on the person, but adult height. plus, the leader's height discrepancy is because they're in a combat stance, weight low and leaning forward. they're only slightly shorter than the people directly behind them if you straighten them in your mind.
which still puts frisk and sans at around 5 foot, making papyrus 6-6 1/2 foot, and asgore at 9 or more. and frisk is a child if you recall, not an adult. in fact, sans and frisk are only slightly shorter than the humans in the intro, coming to the center of asgore's chest while the adults come to his pecs. this also means that alphys is taller than the average human, just so you're aware. so is muffet.
basically, what this means is frisk, despite being a child, is at the average height for adult humans in his world, which puts him at 5 foot or more, since our average height is 5'5". which raises the question, "how old is frisk?" because if he's considered a young child at adult height, either humans in undertale grow really, absurdly fast, or they live really, absurdly long.

I think either Frisk might be a teenager...
Or the leader of the human army is a child.

Actually, that's quite possible. Undertale is an RPG, stuff like that happens in RPGs.

IDC WHAT ANYONE ELSE SAYS IT IS NOW MY HEADCANON THAT THE HUMAN ARMY LEADER IS A KID

hellspawnz In reply to DeviantLucario [2017-03-09 09:18:19 +0000 UTC]
then that would imply that the entire army is also kids. since they're all about the same height. including the seven most powerful human mages in history.
basically, characters in undertale are whatever height you want them to be, whether that means papyrus can carry frisk in one hand, or frisk is half a head shorter than papyrus.
