Next, let's say

One way of putting it I suppose.

This one isn't directly connected to anything, but it'd fall at least after the whole eye business , and becomes rather poignant after Sans learns to heal . As always you can get a better sense of where it is chronologically by looking at it in the index .

This is probably the most civil these two have been to each other so far. The next couple may be more Sans-focused since he hasn't had much to do in this whole shebang just yet, haha.

I totally would have called this ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if dev allowed it.

Sans, Gaster (c) Undertale: lucky he didn't actually rip it in half or your clever metaphor would've fallen apart

When he said "Come on, 2-P is waiting", it sounds like something a teacher or parent would say rather than a scientist that sees the boys a just things.
Because a THING can't be waiting - anticipating 1-S's return.

It's a small thing but It's why I like this part so much. That, and I love metaphors and this one is brilliant.

ironically im pretty sure thats exactly what hes done. they used to just be 1 and 2.

now they are 1-S and 2-P in other words

1-Sans and 2-Papyrus

Not giving them names dehumanizes them, makes it harder to form a connection
though that hasn't stopped that from happening,
but I'm sure for him it helps keeps him reminded that they're just experiments

I like how Gaster explains the two pieces, how one never comes out the same only a different size.

I really like how they both connect in this one, and it's rather sweet, and very smart.

peaachi In reply to ??? [2016-05-24 13:54:33 +0000 UTC]

It surprises me that people think Gaster's explanation is "fatherly" or nice". It isn't at all. It's pretty cold and he's not trying to make Sans feel better, as evident by Sans expression in the last panel. Seems more like an unintentionally blunt reminder to Sans that he and Papyrus are experiments. Just "pieces" that he's using.

Is that what you see? I saw it as him connecting two dots in his head and asking himself the question, "Is that what he did to make me and bro? And what...or who...did he rip apart to do it?"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

peaachi In reply to Roronoa-Forte [2016-05-24 17:20:10 +0000 UTC]

That makes sense too. My interpretation was a little darker; I guess because I based it on Gaster's actions and what he's put the skelebros through so far.

Roronoa-Forte In reply to peaachi [2016-05-24 23:01:40 +0000 UTC]

A deliberate attempt on Gaster's part to detach himself emotionally from them. We see him plagued by "what if" visions of what life might be like if he had been a father figure to them, instead of a scientist experimenting on his lab rats.

Gaster believes with his whole soul that his research is more important than his or even his "children's" physical well-being. "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."

It just goes to show that Gaster does have a heart. He does have a soul. He does have feelings. He quite obviously does not like inflicting pain...we saw how many packs of cigarettes he went through after the hand plates were attached. He feels that if he is not 100% focused on his goal, then he will have failed every denizen of the Underground, not just himself and the two little skeletons. He is, for better or for worse, taking the immense weight of the survival of his people and their culture onto his shoulders, and his alone. Nobody else can know about his research, or provide him any assistance, because of the morally-ambiguous nature of the experiments.

But if he lets himself feel anything for these two little skeletons, even just a little, at the very least it will compromise his research. Worst case scenario, it's rendered totally worthless and without meaning, along with all the pain and suffering he has both endured and caused.

Sans really is clever. He's connected two sets of dots...I think, on some level, he's beginning to understand the sacrifices Gaster has made, and why.

I don't think full and complete understanding will come until much later....like when you wanna have a bad time.

I understand that he's not heartless or unfeeling, but he's still a terrible person in my opinion. Actions speak louder than intentions and everything else.

when you rip a paper in two without thinking about it, you'll have 2 uneven sheets of paper (one small and one big). that's how gaster made sans and papyrus.

Waaait.... Okay, I think I get it now! (It took me reading it two times, though...) The way I'm thinking of it is: The two little hand pieces are in one pile of.... let's just say gray goo. Gaster tries to separate them as careful as possible, but one has too little, and one has a little too much.

TheIceBlade45 In reply to Akatsuki4eva666 [2016-05-24 17:32:47 +0000 UTC]

it was a oddly nice way of putting it for him though.

hes basically saying that when he made sans and papyrus there was no telling how either of them would come out. and that they were bound to be different.

Don't question why I got experience in this matter (related to my job)
but HOW MANY papers DID you rip in person to get that surprisingly
realistic tear? Because that is how paper behaves without weaknesses
like folds or precision pulling. Bravo for great metaphor and details!
