Their broken, fractured memories seem to be the only thing that tethers Gaster to any kind of existence at this point, incorporeal or otherwise.
I'm willing to bet that the next time he's seen in this context, his coat will be black, and his visage will be twisted.
Not unlike what came out of that dimensional portal. Who knows? Maybe Gaster and that thing have some kind of mental war that he wins, and he merges with that entity and controls it somehow. Or at least, wrangles it into submission.
