Sounds possible. Maybe he could speak in some "normal" font if he really tried, but doesn't becasuse everyone around him seems to understand him just fine through sign language (or in case of the skelebros, his normal font). And when Gaster disappeared, the skelebros didn't have to keep the windings anymore, so they were free to learn their natural fonts.

Well there's also the fact that Wing Dings is Gaster's font, while San's and Pap's aren't, they just learned that because that was all they were subjected to. So when Gaster disappears, they are left without that language anymore and can learn to talk with their actual fonts, while Gaster could only really talk with that one font. Because it's not a language, it's a font, so he is speaking english (or whatever language exists in the undertale universe) it's just that it's coded permanently, both in a symbol font sense and a gaming sense. Or at least, that's what I take from it.
