Description
Some wondered about Gaster's metaphorical bonecage and how and when that started, and to an extent he's always put up walls between himself and others, he can't help it. Emotional intimacy is terrifying and embarrassing! But before the project got under way, Asgore and Toriel could wave their way past those walls without too much trouble. After it began he started shutting people out a lot harder and more actively and the whole mindscape sort of changed.He probably feels the most comfortable being healed by Alphys, actually. Back when he could heal , he was okay at healing her in return, but he was never a great healer by any means.

I love the symbolism here.
Gaster pushes everyone away by shielding himself, but he needs to let them in to heal.
Meanwhile Alphys is always doubting herself, losing herself in the dark. She just needs someone to help her out.

If you take a look at the comics, Sans and Papyrus are able to heal each other, no problem.Β It's just a matter of effort (strength of power?Β Determination?) at that point.
