In that context, he's actually letting you off easy. Dying once hardly matters.
When Sans says he'll give you a bad time, he means that he intends to kill you over and over, change the rules as soon as you get the hang of them, and eventually prevent you from doing anything at all, until you ragequit on existence.
Of course, whether this strategy works or not is still your call in the end. There's no limit on how many times you can try again.
