Description
A one-shot before we hit the next major arc. Some of you have wondered how the brothers' battling abilities have been going, particularly Sans. They've still been practicing! Papyrus in particular is practicing the one blue/one white attack the two of them share. At the end of Papyrus's version, one pair of bones goes at you about as fast as Sans's, so Papyrus COULD go that fast if he wanted to, but doesn't.
The line Sans is referencing is back from when he passed out for those few days . His philosophy about doing your best attack first shows up somewhere else though...

That's a good philosophy though. It makes sense. Why play around with your opponent when your objective is to take them down? When one has an objective, they should complete it with utmost efficiency, like what Sans intents to do.

Undyne hasn't told Papyrus that he's supposed to kill them, so he doesn't know. He just thinks he's supposed to capture them.
She knows that he is strong enough to take down an opponent, but he does not have the heart to actually hurt anyone. Papyrus is the most controlled character in the game for that reason and the only one who never kills you. Even Toriel can accidentally kill Frisk while fighting.

The problem is Papyrus's objective isn't to take them down. He doesn't understand yet that he's supposed to kill whatever human he finds. He mentions "impressing our human adversaries" which while a nice sentiment, both opponents simply fighting to impress one another with their skills, it's not reality. Sans is aware of this but Paps isn't. Or if he is he doesn't want to admit it.

Undyne hasn't told Papyrus that he is expected to kill them. She knows that if she did, he wouldn't be willing to, as he's not the killing type.

Pap is truly the best motivational speaker
honestly, when I first played Undertale I hated Sans because his character just came across as a lazy asshole that's condescending towards you and his own brother. I couldn't understand why people liked him or thought he was cool.
It's through Papyrus' character and their relationship that I was able to appreciate Sans as a character

I love Undyne, though her relationship with Papyrus and Alphys definitely makes her better.
The only character I despise is Chara, who the fandom adores and glorifies for some reason despite everything in the game telling us they were a shitty, psychopathic kid that fucked up Asriel/Flowey and the rest of the underground with their plan.

TBF, when it comes to Chara, a big bulk of it ends up being speculation, projection and just hoping they are something more than what's given to us. Of course, we'll never know the real answer as Chara is basically *made* to be ambiguous to stir up conversation... but of course many will claim that there's 'canon' info that Chara does this and that, but it's never really that obvious. I've read quite a bit of theories/posts both from criticizers and supporters of Chara and my opinion for them boiled down to "no comment" lol.
Though this is a thing for pretty much any character with little to work with (and even then), so I guess it's not really a new thing.

And of course nobody has the heart to tell Papyrus what the guards are supposed to do (hint: it's what Sans is telling him to).
However, he's not wholly wrong about the "lazy" part; just doing the same simple attack as before at a higher speed is Baby's First Difficulty Increase, and actual effort looks more like those weird timeskip attacks.

I have MS, so getting up and moving around every day is a struggle. And something about what Sans said really resonated with me. "I ain't ever gonna be more than my "condition.""
it's like ever since I was diagnosed, everyone treats me like I'm made of glass. My mom and my husband always get after me to take my medications and shots and take care of myself, but I'm always like, "what's the point? Doing good or doing bad, it's like the disease is part of my identity now. There's no cure, and the pain will never stop." So some days, it's hard to fight this opposed to just stepping back and accepting my fate. But where everyone who gives me pity, my mom and my husband give me hell because some days when I feel like giving up, they know I can do better. Now that you point it out, maybe they arnt asking me to fight for their sake, they want me to fight so I won't give up on myself.

Even if Sans' first attack is his strongest, it's not his most difficult to dodge.
One particular attack I find very difficult to dodge, the one where pairs of long bones on the right and left go from bottom to top really fast, but one side being ahead of the other side so it's like a zipper, really fast and really hard to dodge.
I dunno if I'm supposed to be at the top middle and then move left and right really fast, coz it's during the REAL battle which is pretty far ahead...
There is also one of his "blink" attacks during the REAL battle that I can't really dodge because of the two platforms, one at top and one lower, with short bones all over the floor of the box, and two tall bones from the sides coming to the center. Only thing that makes it doable is the fact that it's a "blink" and is quickly switched out with a new attack.
Those blink attacks of his are pretty strange and hard...I wonder how he developed those...

Love the GB providing extra dimension to this comic by simply lifting Sans UP beyond the confines of the frame and then bringing him back to ground. It works well as a physical demonstration of his attempt to distance himself emotionally, but then Papyrus pulls him back like a determined kid tugging at the strings of a helium balloon drifting away... not gonna escape this cinnamon!!
