In all honesty I didn't care when Sans and Papyrus were tortured/trained, I was just glad that at least Gaster created them instead of them never being born in the first place, now they have a nice home and friends and everything. Nothing could have gone wrong

I was thinking about the same thing. Everyone points out all the bad stuff that happened after he got that idea (and no, I'm not denying that it was horrible, and I didn't like to see Sans and Papyrus hurt), but everyone's forgetting that if Gaster didn't get that idea, Sans and Papyrus would simply never exist, and we wouldn't even know what we were missing in our lives! Those two brought so much joy to us and for the simple fact that they do exist we should be grateful to Gaster. ^^

Yes, actually. Any random collection of characterization tropes and monster features could be turned into an Undertale character. It wouldn't be quite the same without these particular skeletons, but it would work.

Ok, let me rephrase the question. Once you KNOW about Sans and Papyrus, and you love them, would you like to see UT without them? Would you accept such a reality? That's why I said that they wouldn't exist and we wouldn't know what we're missing. When we don't know about them, we would be ok since we'd be oblivious, but since we DO know, accepting their absense would be hard.

Sure, of course. But I've gone through about a dozen scenarios where Sans and his messed up family are the most likely to be retroactively erased anyway -- just look at canon. An Undertale universe without that existential angst...would feel wrong, horrible as it sounds.
So I guess you're right: I need Sans in my Undertale, because I need him to die.
