Description
Hey there, everybody! Here is my first attempt at a tutorial for DA. Hooray!
I just wanted to make a generally straight forward tutorial. I don't get into too many details but it shows a high level view of my process. Hopefully it won't be too offensive, hehe.
This is all correct information when using Photoshop 7-CS4 Extended. I work on an Intuous 3.
Let me know what you think and I'll do my best to provide updates and answers.
Only one amendment: I forgot to explain that my method of keeping things separate and organized helps you remain flexible when you want to change things quickly.
That's all.
Thanks everyone!
M!

I'd love some critique, I could never figure out how to get the opacity brush to work till I read it, I finished another picture that usually would have taken me days in a few hours [link] (I also finshed so quickly due to my new tablet but the tutorial helped a lot!)

The main thing that I would suggest as a crit is to adjust the temperatures of your shadows and highlights. If you kept everything on separate layers then it should be easy. I would pull the shadows towards blue so that they are more red/purple. The highlights I would pull more towards yellow and a touch brighter so they turn the form more.
Also, try making your grays a little more blue as well. Just a little.
Great job though. I'm glad the tutorial could help out. I think color selection is where the most improvement can come from but that takes a lot of practice. Keep it up!

Thanks! I used layers and I understand the opacity brush a lot better so it'll be better. Quick question, Do you mean blue as in Blue (RGB) or blue as in Cyan (CMYK), or does it not matterwhich I use?

It doesn't matter. Basically just pull it cooler. If I had the PSD I could show you more exactly but it should be pretty easy to balance it. Lemme know if that works out for you.

Wow. I know this sounds dumb, but how do you configure the brushes opacity to change with the pressure?

Zatransis In reply to kimikana [2009-02-23 06:26:25 +0000 UTC]
That's in the brush settings. Click on "Other Dynamics" and the turn on opacity and select pen pressure. If that description isn't clear enough let me know.

Great tut!
Good advice about the layers. Unfortunately I am one who is always forgetting to change the layer before I start painting! oops. LOL.
Thanks for posting.

Ok Zat, now that I've read it, I can tell: It suuure does help!! I colour my pics so basically I got stuck on my technique and style, but thanks to this one, I think I have a new path(or many) right in front of me!
Now I can say it: Thanks M&M's!!
Pd: And by the way, my way to colour pics is just creating a layer above and putting it in "multiply" mode. Now guess how shitty was that!

I'm really glad it helps out. That's awesome to hear!
Hopefully this will give you more flexibilty than just Multiply.

Awesome! Thank you for this.
I never thought of setting the lineart layer as soft-light before; I usually just paint under or over the lines. That's a really sweet technique!

Great! That's what I like to hear. People taking little elements and finding a use for them. Awesome!
And thanks for the kind words.

Yeah, seperate tutorials for the base painting (plus how you keep it in the lines, that is if there's a technique beyond just doing your best to paint in the line) the shadows and highlights and finishing touches would be good follow-up. But, it's a good overall work tutorial.
