Description Another thing from my first tour with DSLR: A lonesome signal with some derelict tracks in Grauhof. Grauhof is a small selection of houses (way below village) near Goslar, Germany.

The first railway line from Vienenburg (north-east of Goslar) to Hildesheim (west of Goslar) didn't lead via Goslar itself, but instead the much smaller Grauhof, possibly thanks to the huge mess Germany was politically in the 19th century. Later, a second line was built a few kilometers to the south, which finally got Goslar it's rail connection. During the cold war, the east-west traffic in the region died nearly completely, seeing as Goslar is less than twenty kilometers away from the old Iron Curtain. Consequently, the old Grauhof line, which had been used for freight trains before, was shut down.

At some corners, however, you can still find bits and pieces, such as here. The old semaphore has lost most of it's small parts, but I think in the autumn sun it still looked nice here.

Is there any chance this route will get reactivated now that the green border is history?

ZCochrane In reply to HerrDrayer [2009-02-09 08:22:52 +0000 UTC]

Very unlikely, I'd say. The few freight trains we have can easily fit in with the modest passenger traffic on the route via Goslar. The reason why the Grauhof line was left open was that the other one is a little steeper and some of the heavier trains need two locomotives to get the necessary tractive effort. I don't think it'd be cost-effective to re-open this line just for that.

Thank you for the !

Hmmm, then perhaps it would make a good rail museum mainline...(^_^)

We already have one of those (well, nearby, in Salzgitter), and it's falling apart thanks to fights amongst the club members and lack of funding...

Rustic
The autumn colours set it off nicely and give it a disused but peaceful look.
