Description
This sharp style is super fun to apply to different things - and I thought it'd be interesting to try someone rather different and unique like Sonic. But as I was filtering him through the style, I started to notice that Sonic's design could totally use an overhaul.
So, if you're interested in a design analysis, continue with the reading thing. ;D
Sonic's original design is clever and innovative in its bold reinterpretation of a hedgehog with a simple and iconic silhouette, using just a few pixels. But as graphical technology has evolved, I feel like his bold style has become a bit clunky. So, I wanted to refresh his look, aiming to maintain the original core design principles, but realized with more advanced graphics.
Sonic's most recognizable feature is his spiked head - but the rest of his body appears a bit generic in comparison. So, I shrunk his head to avoid it dominating his design and then created some repeating features like the blue tufts, white stripes and red streaks. I also altered his body proportions to try and make his entire silhouette recognizable more than just his head. Sonic's classic stylized eyes are really playful, however I made a point of dividing his eye lids and eyebrows, plus making his ears look flexible to allow for a bit more expressive diversity. In his original look, putting emphasis on his shoes seemed like a natural representation of his speed – but any movements outside of running just look clumsy. So, I shifted the focus to his legs to evoke the same agile form seen in animals like cats and rabbits. Finally, since the limited number of clothing items made the lack of shirt and pants a bit awkward, I just removed his attire completely.
While Mario’s design is somewhat confined to his cute, moustached and overalled appearance, I think Sonic’s simple focus on speed is much more versatile to new interpretations. I encourage Sonic Team to see that his original design made the most of the medium at its time, and that today’s Sonic can do the same.

It's different, that's for sure. But it looks good anyways.

It's a better redesign than the movie managed. At least this makes sense.

Oh, thanks! Yeah, I guess this one is different enough that it's obviously a redesign. But the film sits in that uncanny valley of not quite different but not quite the same. Still, I'm very interested what this #gottafixfast brings us.

Yeah.
Also..it's a reference to critically-acclaimed games with similar design cues (such as Journey)

I would love to play a sidescroller-platformer with this version of Sonic. He'd look so good with a back-and-forth motion of arms and legs instead of Sonic's classic wheel-feet-run. This evokes a sleek, parkour aesthetic and keeps Sonic's cheeky attitude without the cringiness that typically accompanies modern Sonic. I would put money down for this game today if I could.

That's so cool to hear - thank you! Yeah, I can definitely imagine this version inspiring a totally different aesthetic. Perhaps I'll animate a run cycle sometime.

This is a really adorable redesign.. it's making me picture a more stylized world that he could inhabit as well.

Oh cool! I had considered doing more of a background, but I'd say you're imagination looks better than anything I would have tried. Glad you like it, man!

While this is a cool redesign, I don't think it's a redesign that would work ANIMATED.
Remember, as a video game character, Sonic needs to look both good standing still and in motion. His emotions need to be clear from a glance, his movements needs immediate visual impact so the player knows exactly what Sonic is doing at any time.
Sonic's original over sized eyes, head, hands, and feet made it very easy to tell what Sonic was thinking, what he was feeling, and what he was doing, even with a limited amount of pixels.
This redesign heavily limits what the animators can do. Without fingers, Sonic can't point at things, ball his hands into fists, holds up a V for victory sign.
The small eyes with the red line under them are so much harder to emote with than Sonic's impossible giant connected eyes.

Good analysis! I can definitely see the benefit of his larger features supporting his expression.
However, something I was considering was that from a 2D perspective, his expression was always visible. But now that camera stays behind him in his 3D games and hides his facial expression, I feel that a simpler silhouette would make his body expression much clearer. Additionally, since Sonic games seem to put more emphasis on the visceral experience rather than the story, this more fluid form would also emphasizes his smooth and dynamic actions - specifically for a detailed and fully 3D style, where the camera can be manipulated to highlight particular moments.
But, that aside - mine isn't necessarily the definitive version - just one concept based on the principles I set out in the description. Thanks for your thoughts!

I'd like to visit, just visit, an alternate universe where Sonic's design went this direction, and where each Sonic game is better than the last...
Anyways, looks like a great design!

Right on! Yeah, it's ironic that he's known for going fast, and yet it feels like he's stagnating.
But hey, glad you like it!

Way better than that weird thing they have now! Seriously, they over-stylized Sonic in the other direction. This is really cool.
