Description
I took this photo hoping to get a macro of this interesting looking catapillar that was devouring my potted fig tree. the pose was great and I hoped it would be a captivating composition. Unfortunately the self focus on my macro choose the leaf just in front of the catapillar instead to focus on so the final image was slightly blurred. Very disappointing. The second one has the focus but not the pose.Related content

very nice shot in any case - even if it is a little blurry i love it!

I have no idea what kind of creature this catepillar belongs to but I am asuming it is some kind of moth as we saw some big moths around prior to the eggs on my plant and these catepillars appearing.
Thanks for taking the time to look through my gallery and commenting

I have had the same problem previously so I shoot two or three of them (digital is great!) refocusing each time if I really, really want that shot
still, it is a very interesting catepillar

I've had that focus problem plenty of times. I adjusted my focus point to only one right in the middle to help with it. It is a cool looking caterpiller though. Wonder what type of butterfly or moth this little critter became.

How did you adjust the focal distance to the middle on a standard digital camera with an macro feature? If you could explain the steps then it might help me with my camera as I just seem to only work in with the macro capibilities of 4cm. As for the catepillar I'm not sure of the calprit that lays the eggs on my fig tree but he has been busy of late and left many more to devour all my plant's new shoots! I've never managed to catch them in the egg laying act..... Thanks for your comments.

I'm not sure about your camera, but what I did on mine was set the focus point. I have upto 7 points, or dots, that can be used as the focus point. Instead of having it focus over all 7 of them, I changed it to focus only on the center target dot so that what is in the middle of the picture will be the most focused. On my older Sony camera I could change it a little also. The Sony gave me the opportunity to change the target box from a larger one to a smaller one so that the focus point was smaller.
Macro shots are rather difficult because the depth of field is really tight. What type of camera are you using?

I am using a Nikon coolpix 775. I bought it a couple of years ago now so it is rather old from a technical point of view. I can seem to find any function that will allow me to change the focus area.

[link] "With the monitor off, the camera only performs a single focus per shot. This generally causes focus to nail itself to the nearest object, thus avoiding "stolen focus" in which the background is sharp and nearby objects are blurred. In truth, I haven't found a valid stolen focus moment yet with either single or continuous autofocus unless I was so close that macro focus was called for. The glass, above, was shot with monitor on and Macro mode enabled yet the camera correctly focused on the nearest part of the glass.
Some users seem to have had an "issue" with the focus with the monitor off. I tried to force this "issue" on my camera and simply could not. Firmware on this one is V1.3U. They said focus took forever (anything longer than a second is forever, these days--ask the guy behind you at a green light...) with the monitor off. Mine acquires focus lock in about one second with it on or off over a wide range of lighting conditions. The mystery was resolved when the size of the CF card was revealed to be the culprit. Large capacity cards seem to bring the 775 into slow motion. In particular, the SanDisk 256 and larger cards make shooting s l o w."
It sounds like you have to play around with exactly what is in front of the focus point. Not always easy with macro, but the manual should be able to give you some tips on how the focus system works and the best ways to use it. I was surprised at how small that camera is. Looks like a great little package.

I am currently using a 16X, 256 compact flash by LEXAR. I thought the faster card might be better than the slower 4X. I will have to go back to the manual and have another read.
The camera is very compact and I have had no trouble with that. It has done some pretty amazing stuff since I have bought it. I would liek to have bracket exposure features though and a closer macro.

I know how frustrating it is to get an oppurtunity for a great shot only to have the focus be out of whack
But, I have to say I really like this. It is so soft and beautifully delicate. I'm so glad you submitted it

Thanks for the comments and fav+. The softness does have some appeal now that you have put it into perspective. Maybe I should learn to be more flexible in my concepts and work with what turns out of the camera.

Nice pose, yes, and I know all about the self-focusing, I do spend a while getting the focus points on the subject but do appreciate how difficult it can be
