zedka In reply to ??? [2012-11-08 11:59:06 +0000 UTC]

To be honest I was a bit surprised that this shot was taken as a DD, I have more "remarkable" pictures in my gallery for sure... but it made me think about what people find in there and it's actually very interesting and it makes sense. THere's a tense, an action, and some "schadenfreude" you don't always have in other shots.

This normally happens but you are quite talented to capture such quick moment. Also i think she will embarrass if ever come to know of this photo

Maybe, though I've been pretty astonished with the reaction of people toward some shots I had taken and found embarassing... Sometimes they are more, like, amazed to see it from another perspective.

This girl fell on the floor, loosing one of her shoe... She was okay yes, more surprised than shocked or hurt. As I said somewhere else, it felt kinda pervert to shoot that and not help the girl, I'm not saying that I'll do this everytime but I needed to feel this strange feeling, it made me remember when I was shooting poverty in Cambodia, it was comissioned, and then nobody felt it was cruel, nobody asked me if the people were okay. And at the beginning it felt perfectly okay to shoot there. SOmething I probably wouldn't do again...

especially since the photography instead of helping took a picture like haha you fell & somehow on the interwebs that behavior is rewarded... people suck

THanks for raising that, actually this is the very reason for this picture. This woman fell on the floor, I took a shot. It felt like a cruel attitude first, then I remembered how it was when I was comissioned to shoot extreme poverty in Cambodia, violence here and there... It didn't feel cruel at the moment, a lot of photographer are doing that, but somehow, taking this image felt more offesive. It really means there's something ucked up in the mind of photographers indeed, we need to rethink these scales.

ahh that makes more sence congrats then on the DD

it's not as extreme here but I once heard of a guy who too a shot of a lil girl starving & being harrassed by buzzards waiting her out it got huge awards & contraversy most people like me where horrified it's not "nature" its a PERSON how could you not get involved but the excuse was similar to what you said showing how bad it actually is so people migt care & there is nothing saying he didn't give her candy or something after

I'm sorry but I'm not seeing what's so remarkable about this.....

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zedka In reply to TheDeadlyYears [2012-11-08 00:34:41 +0000 UTC]

There's nothing really "remarkable" here - I mean, of course you can build a whole story out of such a picture, you imagine what's going on before and what will happen after, which can give you a sense of time, but it's not a big and meaningful picture, it's just a dot in time; it's only the series of photographs that are remarkable - they tell the story of the passing time. This image is just a small element of a story, and of a stream of photographic consciousness. It makes more sense when you see the pictures of this page for example : [link] A lot of those pictures were taken on the same hour in the same railway station and they all show what's going on, nearly simultaneously. And to me this profusion of elements and people is remarkable. Thanks for reading!

Yeah, I meant no offense, and apparently there was none taken.

I don't consider myself an 'artist,' and my photographic skills/techniques are fledgling at best, so it may have just gone over my head -passes his hand over the top of his head- Hah hah.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

zedka In reply to TheDeadlyYears [2012-11-08 11:49:32 +0000 UTC]

No absolutely no offense taken. Your comment was honnest and it made sense. I think there's two kind of photographers: those who think their images as some kind of paintings or little pieces of poetry, those images being often "remarkable", instantly perceived as "beautiful"... And those who think of their images as fragments of bigger ensembles, pieces of a greater mosaic, as words or sentences from a novel. The images, in this case, are less "remarkable" I guess. it's another path to beauty. I've done some picturesque pieces ( [link] [link] [link] [link] ) But now I'm onto something else!

TheDeadlyYears In reply to zedka [2012-11-08 23:33:01 +0000 UTC]

I DO read (love "War of the Worlds" and "The Thin Red Line" and such), but my mind doesn't seem to work on the same level when it comes to visual stuff, usually. I'm of the opinion that what works in a movie (for example) rarely works in a book, and what works in the written word rarely works as visuals. A friend was saying the 2003 "Battlestar Galactica" (which I don't like) was like a book, and I was like "Yeah, but this ain't a book.... this is TV!" I don't think abstractly or metaphorically as much as you might think.... some would say it's become I'm dumb.

I know one problem I have when it comes to photography: my digital camera is about a decade old, and getting pretty obsolete. You might use a more traditional camera, but the digitals give me a much better idea of what I'm shooting IMMEDIATELY after I shoot them, and there's no film developing to mess with. Also, I don't always have the steadiest hands (I can get a little nervous when I'm trying to take the PERFECT picture), and the image stabilization helps quite a bit. What camera(s) would you recommend, if you don't mind?

-looks at the picturesque pics- Oh, I really like the first one, and the last one is nice too.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zedka In reply to TheDeadlyYears [2012-11-13 13:25:21 +0000 UTC]

Yes, we are taught to see visual stuffs in a certain way, always linked to painting, but somehow photography can work very differently. Movies are very different indeed, and the adaptation of stories into photographic series didn't work well either. We have to admit that each medium is different and that something very special can be done with that!

That's also why I shoot both digital and analog, both can give different and interesting results. I don't know if I can recommend you a good camera, there's plenty... I'd say take the camera you feel good with - try to test a couple of camera and see which one feels good in your hand, and which one makes you go "I want to go out shooting!" - this is the good one!! Wether it is a Canon, A Nikon, an Olympus... If people could do great shot 70 years ago with what they have, we can do anything now with what's on the market

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TheDeadlyYears In reply to zedka [2012-11-13 16:29:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but those people 70 years ago had 'the touch'..... ya know, natural talent for it.... not sure if I can say the same about myself.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zedka In reply to TheDeadlyYears [2012-11-13 17:43:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, maybe, maybe not, but I don't think they'd do better with today's camera, and I don't think any camera will make your shots better than what they can be, except... the one that'll make you go out and shoot I'm sorry for this vague answer, it's not that I don't know cameras I have like 15 of them, I could pick one good camera that I know on the market and tell you that it's a great one, but today we are lucky to be in a time with many new types of camera being released, that produce different way of taking pictures... Reflexes, compact, mirrorless cameras, rangefinder, pick your favorite!! I know people who spent a lot of money on a great camera and en up taking pictures with their phone, I know people who collect analog rangefinders and end up using more their dslr, so... hard to give you a good and precise advice!
