Description
Finally finished up this up. Honestly, I spent so much time on the wings and they still aren't right. It's one of my "it's time to move on" moments.GAL file - sta.sh/017catzm6ra2

Nice! I've once tried doing pixel sprite, but it was such a pain I gave up. LOL. You have my sincere respect.

I'm not sure how to answer your question, since I usually use random colors at the beginning. And then bring everything together as I work on the rest of the drawing/animation.

I see...are you aware of color mathemathics in objects and lights?
I figured that you make precise colouring like those you might know a thing or two.

No I am not, I'm self taught, so honestly don't know too much other than what I've picked up from others or seen.
Thank you, I'll look and read up on color mathematics to see if I can learn a thing or two. I do believe I have some issues with picking colors sometimes despite what you say. There are times when my artwork ranges from too muddy and full of greys to great. I'm trying to get better, so maybe this will help.

Well, i am more of an animator, so i'm still looking to save time when picking colours.
I face the same problem just like you, it's always hard once the painting becomes larger and the lightings are around to be considered.
I found a particularly good website for color and light. Abit too large and overarching to physics but a better start point than most color theory.
If you are interested we can talk this over at a note, as i also need friends to learn this together

I don't do much traditional 2d animation these days (unless you're counting pixel animation). So I'm not sure if we'd have too much to discuss, but I'd be interested in learning about new things. So feel free to message me if you'd like.

are you by any chance planning to use these for anything? or are these purely for personal enjoyment?

This one I did to finish up a request over on tumblr.
Mostly I draw these fanart sprites for fun and practice. Usually I'm stuck drawing something to get paid, and I need a break after awhile. Or I need to work on animating something with different body parts to keep improving. Honestly, I really like the design of the monsters regardless.

interesting. do you actually work for/with someone or do you only do comissions?

Zedotagger In reply to xglide [2016-03-24 12:54:27 +0000 UTC]
Normally, yes, even on project work. Sometimes I work long term on the project or they give me a bulk order sort of commission, such as, a list of characters and attacks they'll need. I end up getting paid after the work is finished, and I haven't had issues with this arrangement.
I also take personal commissions, but I usually have those on backlog. And only do them when I have time.

Bit weird how the Rathalos you did is on the ground and this Rathian's flying. You've put the King of the Sky and Queen of the Land in theeopposite roles.

Tell this to Capcom. >_> Half the time this is exactly how they behave in the game, or how some of their quest descriptions go.
But that's life in the Monster Hunter world, neh?

Well, I've only played 4 Ultimate, and in my game they mostly stayed in their respective fields (With the exception of small aerial intervals for the Rathians.) so I wouldn't know. But whenever I fight a Rathian in the Primal Jungle the keep going back and forth between 5 and 6 or something for no reason, they even go the 5 when limping before the go to the nesting area.

Ahhh...
In earlier iterations (and, indeed, all the way up through Tri), it was often a terrible coincidence that the Ian would take to the sky almost as, if not more often than the Los. The Los was still a dominator though, since his aerial moveset was more robust, but the Ian would fly so very often it was a wonder she was supposed to queen of the land and not the queen of hovering.

This is really good! My one and only complaint is the last frame, the left wing seems to stretch a little bit awkwardly, but besides that this is a beautiful piece of work!

You might be noticing a frame I got a bit (really) lazy on. I stretched/edited a previous one to tween it since the timing was off.
