TL;DR-/ Shorter ver.-
For the earliest years of Demir's life, he had spent in Egypt happily with his mother and father. At the age of four, his little brother Ahmed was born and the two became nearly inseparable. The family moved to Saint Mihnts soon after Demir's tenth birthday. Their father grew addicted to gambling and loan sharking soon after they settled into their new house. Demir and Ahmed were too young and uninterested to understand why, but the two's mother took it upon herself to work more than one job to support the family in place of their father.

One afternoon as the brothers were walking home from school, they were approached by a small group of adult men. They asked which of the two were the older sibling. Ahmed ran home to call for help as Demir was taken somewhere "private" for a nice "chat." The men left casually, leaving a broken and near-unconscious twelve year old boy to bleed out in the darkness of an alleyway. The last thing Demir thought about before blacking out was how numb his legs felt. The next few days floated past the boy without him-- Demir was under a pattern of drifting in and out of sleep. He officially awoke in a hospital bed: He was lucky enough to escape death at the cost of his legs. Demir later discovered that he was beaten as a sign of warning to the family for not "paying what they owed." As expected, the total bill for his injuries and the cost for prosthetic legs was far more than his mother's current income even with negotiation. Just when the financial suffering could not worsen, the brothers came home one day to a dead father hanging from the living room ceiling fan. He was gone without contributing to or solving the predicament he started... The death of their father sealed the deal of hatred and bitterness for Demir. It was so unfair: to be punished for his father's mistakes, to be robbed of his legs, and to be confined to a wheelchair.

He dropped out in the middle of his sophomore year of high school in order to join his mother in working to pay off the debt. By this point, Demir and his family managed to raise the money for prosthetic legs (with the help of emergency funds.) Demir found himself a "job" via a "contract" of sorts at the age of seventeen. With it the debt on his family's shoulders had been lifted, albeit gradually so as not to arouse suspicion. It was probably a shadier job than loan sharking, but if it kept his family off the street for another week, Demir would do it no questions asked. Two years later, Demir had done a good job of keeping the secret of his contract away from his family and he continues to do so. He even convinced them further with his regular job as a courier. Sometimes he wonders how much longer he can go without having to tell them the truth.
