Zeldaness — How to Make Costume Elf Ears

Description Hooray! My first tutorial!
Inspiration: I was looking to buy elf ears, saw the prices and Bam! Inspiration. In my first attempt I used aluminum foil, double stick tape, and plastic wrap. Later, as I got addicted to craft foam by making armor, I came to this method. I just had to make this tutorial for the good of my fellow deviants (and for fame and fortu...well, fame.)
But enough of my silliness, here's the link to my patterns: [link]
I hope this tutorial is helpful, and if you have any questions, just comment or note me.

I am so happy I found this. This is a lot better (read: cheaper!) than store-bought ears.
Thank you ma'am! Now Link costumes at Halloween are no longer impossible for me.

hey the link to yours patterns isn't working (it could just be my computer so I apologize for bothering you in advance.) is there another way for you to send me the link?

Zeldaness In reply to xxxdisneylvrxxx [2010-09-13 15:14:41 +0000 UTC]

The link is but that's just the same format as the last one. It's not a regular file, because it's compressed it won't show up as a picture, instead, when you click on it, a pop-up will ask you where you want to save it. If you disable your pop-up blocker, it should work for you.

This looks really cool!! do you think it would be too heavey if I added model magic or some sort of clay to it to shape it more? and are there any other ways I could attatch it better to my ear?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zeldaness In reply to darkrainbowwolf [2010-08-31 16:50:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
I had actually thought of adding model magic to it. (I just recently discovered model magic) My two concerns with adding model magic: 1. you need a color that matches your craft foam, otherwise, you would have to use some other method of coloring. 2. Model magic doesn't spread, so any bumps you put on it will stick out--a lot, and not blend into the ear. You don't, however have to be concerned about the heaviness part, model magic is even lighter than craft foam.
So my advice is: experiment. You might even like to try paper clay (my second recent discovery) paper clay spreads better, and is almost as light. Just don't use any baking clay, (such as fimo or sculpy) they're usually very heavy and craft foam melts when heated.
As for the ways of attachment, I really have no idea. Maybe you could use something that is used to hold latex attachments on? I don't know, but double stick tape is about as sticky as you can get, anything stronger and you may not be able to get it off the elf ear when you're done--or off your ear for that matter.

Zeldaness In reply to K0USEKI [2010-07-23 14:03:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh, sorry. The tutorial is of me making model B, although the picture at the end is model A, because I only had one model B ear.
In general, model A is more feminine; B, gender neutral; and A, masculine.
If you want to see more pictures of the elf ears, go to my gallery. (Zelda wears type A, Link wears type C. Type B is tutorial exclusive)

geminiswede In reply to ??? [2010-07-17 17:18:11 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for making this tutorial - I'm probably going to try it with my Zelda costume since I'm already using craft foam for the armor.

Does the double stick tape really hold them well enough all day?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zeldaness In reply to geminiswede [2010-07-18 12:33:03 +0000 UTC]

Your welcome. And yes, double stick tape does stay on all day,(at least the brand that I had did) but not if you stick and unstick it a bunch of times to adjust it.

How much does craft foam cost a sheet?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zeldaness In reply to Thesunsetsblack [2010-06-19 14:57:48 +0000 UTC]

A dollar, give or take 30 cents, depending on where you get it.

Thesunsetsblack In reply to Zeldaness [2010-06-19 18:08:40 +0000 UTC]

And how many sheets of foam did it take for you to create your shoulder armor?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zeldaness In reply to Thesunsetsblack [2010-06-19 18:29:19 +0000 UTC]

Two, if you also wanted to use it for a crown, ears, and belt, you would need three.

Alright, thanks! I'm making an elven rogue costume for this year's Metrocon. I'm going to make the shoulder armor, ears, maybe some forearm armor and a foam dagger.

Trollkid [2010-06-02 15:46:19 +0000 UTC]

Whoa, that's a lot more intricate than the way they do it in my country. Where I live, all they do is cut an ear out of paper and tape it on to give the illusion of elf ears.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zeldaness In reply to Trollkid [2010-06-02 16:36:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, people around here are crazy, most go out and buy latex elf ears for $25 (about $35 singapore dollars). People want the best, and if they make their own they want it to look as good as the ones in the stores.
