I finally got my hands on two Breakdown Trains so I could do this. I took one apart and turned it around to be the front crane and flatbed. Then I pried the magnets out of the back one's crane and flatbed, and turned them around so that the back one could connect to the back couplings of engines. Now all it needs to be truly complete is the Works Unit Coach.Related content

How does the crane suspend in the air?
mine doesn't do that so I'm afraid I might be missing an important part

It just works by friction against the sides of the slot in the crane housing. If yours doesn't, then it's just worked loose from being played with. Try coating the inside of the slot with clear nail polish or the like (making sure to jiggle the crane arm to keep it from sticking), or if there's a screw on the side (it's been a while since I did this project, I forget) try tightening that first.
