I love the black and white concept, also, the spindly nature of the entire picture seems to let one focus attention on the solid figures of the cats.

I like how the white cat, similiar to Emily is on the black, somewhat signifying all the trouble and darkness around her.

The same for Ed and the black snow falling around him. And at the same time, it looks as though because he looks on to Emily, the rest of his world can be bright again.
