Matthew is just typically seen as very much the submissive partner in their relationship, so even though they are depicted in this picture as fairly equal, it is still quite a jump in manliness for our little Canadian. I don't think he is given enough credit in that regard...but it is Prussia he's dealing with, lol. I love them both together regardless. I think they're perfect for one another.

I also have a bit of a bias in that I am Canadian. xD I'm pretty sure that a DVD of the compiled most violent hockey fights in NHL history would be a best-seller for months, if it hasn't been already. So it's hard to see us as that timid, even if we often are in foreign relations. If that makes sense.
I don't think I could draw moe-Canada if I wanted to, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. xDD

I am Canadian myself. I actually owned a couple Don Cherry hockey fight compilation tapes, lol. Used to go watch games at my local arena every other Saturday too.
Dude....goalie fights are the best. They are rare and always amazing.
It's refreshing to see Mattie be more manly, I think. Although I do enjoy him being moe from time to time when Prussia is concerned.

I don't mind moe-Canada when other people do it. I just can't myself. Especially since I like those loud, vain characters like Prussia or America as uke so much. x3

I very much enjoy messing around with roles when it comes to the characters I write regularly. Working on a story with a slightly more manly Matthew right now, and there's a half finished story on my computer with a not so jerk-like Gilbert. It's fun to try sometimes.

The characters as they are in canon aren't really developed enough to write good fic with, so you really have to do some character development to use them. I think that's one of my favorite things about the fandom, really. Two people might write/draw the same character in completely different ways, but neither of them is wrong. It makes thing interesting.

I agree with you fully. Which is why it gets kind of annoying when people flame you for writing a character too OOC. Like you said, the characters in their parent material are so loosely defined that they are completely open to interpretation.
