Chapter 2: Sam

      Since that
day, the change once again returned to my life ,no mother,no real
family,no hope, no freedom, and now no baby sister Sarah.

I imagined Sarah and her sweet smile.
I shivered when I thought of her alone with Madame. Mrs. Lilli
interrupted my thoughts by saying “ You' re sure wild!”,
I flinched. “ Maybe I could've taken the other li'l one 'stead
of you” I squirmed and mumbled. I couldn't believe it, she was
just like Madame, I had to say something “ Well that's still
separating us” I said quietly. She started to raise her voice
“What did you say!” I turned to face her, to stand up for
myself to stand up for Sarah. “I said that's still separating
us!”.”Why you li'l ...” She then turned around to
slap me. She realized that she took her hands off the wheel, but it
was already too late. The car spun out of control.  I saw glass
flying everywhere, and felt extreme force on my neck. I noticed I was
starting to bleed and Mrs. Lilli was knocked out. I didn't get a
single chance to think before I heard the wailing cry of the
ambulance siren. What would happen if they found me here?   I lay
there and did as I thought I should; I played dead, or at least very
hurt. I heard them getting nearer and nearer, their footsteps
approaching. I couldn't make out what they said, but I knew they were
whispering... about me. I felt one poke the back of my arm, it was
firm. The segregation was so strong that period of time, even doctors
would let that stop them from taking in a injured black person. One
pushed me and seemed to look at me disgustingly, the other seemed to
argue with him and looked at me fondly, a feeling of care and loss
was in his eyes. He refused to leave me there, and did against the
other man's will. At last, the other man gave in regrettably and
carried me in on a stretcher. I heard him say “I don't get you
Sam, most people wouldn't do such a thing like this! Why won't you
listen to reason and at least sell her?”. There was a long
pause,  “I'm afraid I can't agree with that” said the one
named Sam. The other man sighed and said “Your lucky I'm your
friend or I'd turn you in to the police!”. Sam didn't reply.
After a while I felt someone poke me, I weakly turned around. “Drink
this” one man said while holding a  strange looking liquid
inside the dirty looking cup he held out. “Yes sir..” I
said weakly and coughed. Taking the cup from his hand, it had the
most displeasing odor I had ever came across. And whether I liked it
or not I knew I had to drink it; The taste was even worse than it's
smell. It tasted of mashed garlic and swamp water.  When I finished,
the man immediately snatched the cup back from me, his eyes narrowed.
“ I suggest you sleep” he said. Realizing it was quite
late I considered his words “Yes sir” I quickly replied.
After he left, I rolled back onto the stretcher and closed my eyes,
“Tomorrow will be different” I thought. “I must
wake early, and escape, for the following morning they plan to put me
up for sale”. And with that, I  closed my eyes.  The next day,
I awoke to silence. The sun had not yet risen and I felt it was safe
enough to get up. Slowly, and carefully I got up from the stretcher
and looked around. No one. Quickly, I headed away from the place
where we camped the night. I didn't look ahead for my mind new I
couldn't get caught. I kept looking behind me, hoping I would be
safe. Suddenly, “Clash” that's when I bumped into Sam.
Before I could run away, he gently grabbed me to prevent me from
escaping and shushed me, for he knew that if I were to be heard and
he was to be seen helping me, he knew we would both be punished,...
severely. “Shh” he said, as he carried me to a quiet
clearing, far away from the camp. “Don't worry” he said
calmly, “I'm here to help you”. Normally, if someone
would say that, I wouldn't believe it but I could tell he was safe,
somehow, I could just tell.
